I had gotten hermits and snails a while ago, and the snails are fine. The hermits moved around for a couple days and then stayed in the same spot for two weeks, I lifted up their shells just to see nothing or bits of crab fly out. Any reasoning? I also haven’t seen my pistol shrimp since I got it on March 8th, is it dead? At least I know my clownfish dont like me because they started nipping at my hand 😂

How long has your tank been set up?

Has the tank ever had copper in it?
Unless the water stuck to my fish when I empty them out of my acclimation jar along with the copper water is substantial enough to somehow kill something, then no, I don’t think anyone rinses their live fish?

It doesn't take much copper at all to kill hermits but you said the snails are fine if that was it I would think the snails would die as well.

It is odd all of the hermits died at the same time though. That tells me it could be something more than just mere coincidence.

Did you buy this tank brand new or used? What about the equipment? RODI water or tap?

Show us a picture of your tank if you can. The good news is, hermits are cheap so I’d recommend getting a few more and monitor them. If the next batch dies, time for an ICP test. If you don’t know what that is, google it.

So what were your nitrates? Phosphates? Calcium? These parameters I have seen affect hermits the most. I personally don't like hermits, but that is just me. It could be copper, but I don't think it is. Maybe an ICP test would show some high metals maybe?

Brand new, I am buying premixed salt RODI and topping off with fresh RODI from my fish store, I will attach a picture and research an ICP test

Calcium, phosphates or any water parameter really won’t cause a mass die off like that unless it’s really, REALLY out of range. Copper would be my first suspect, then bacteria and then most likely starvation. But high phosphates or high/low calcium will not kill hermits.

It is true that is would have to be really out of range but in my tank, My hermits have died from phosphates that are >2.5, which has been an ongoing problem for me but all the corals and fish look good though............
