Put two zebra dart fish and two clowns in QT yesterday. I have not started any treatment yet, but noticed this on the back part (just ahead of the tail). Is this something to be concerned about? My plan is to let’s them settle in for a few days then start seachem cupramine.

I have seen some marks, and discoloration with fish just purchased. My guess is from the process of catching with a net, transport, stress, etc. I bet it goes away in a day or two. I would just watch and see at this point.

I’d do a freshwater dip to check for flukes. If I saw any in the dip container, I’d start treatment with that.

If it is flukes, I would adjust the proposed copper treatment and probably switch to hypo, which would be easier on the fish and would treat for ich and flukes. Most other things you can observe. I assume ich is what you are concerned about.

Would Prazi take care of flukes? If I plan to use it anyway is a freshwater dip necessary?

If the fish has flukes, I’d recommend doing prazipro and kanaplex. Almost every fish (at least 3 out of 4) I’ve treated with visible flukes/symptoms has had secondary infections after the flukes were killed. If you don’t have flukes (or a small amount), there isn’t a reason to for the additional antibiotics. Also, if the fish has flukes, I would start with that treatment before doing the copper prophylactic treatment.

So yes, I think there is a good reason to do the freshwater dip, but if you aren’t comfortable doing it, you could move straight to treatment.

Yes it is still best to conduct a FWD as Prazipro causes the flukes to spasm which can be painful and damaging to the fish the skin.

Here is what you'll need.

- Clear bucket or plastic tubberware container.
- RODI water that is same temperature and PH as your aquarium
- Air stone for water circulation
- amquel or prime to help reduce ammonia build up
- allow for 5-7 minutes in the FWD depending on the health of your fish.

Start there and if you see sesame seed like pieces fall off into the water and then you will know how to proceed.

Thanks! Two last questions... if I wait until tomorrow to do the dip would the likely be ok? Is there any product I should use to match ph?

Thanks. Two questions, any harm in waiting a day or two to dip? Any product recommendations to match ph? Thanks again.

Is your fish eating well and active?

Seachems marine buffer is what I use when conducting FWD. Just use a tiny amount and use reliable PH test kit to ensure both FW and DT water match. Same temperature is extremely important as well.

Yes, everyone is active now and all appeared interested in food this morning.

Do ph kits (Red Sea) work for both fresh and salt water? Is there a different brand I should use?

Thats a good sign they are eating. Waiting a day would be fine but the quicker you complete the quicker you can diagnose the issue.

Red Sea test kits are awesome and I believe they are made for marine aquariums only.

Do you add prime from the start? Or during? Thanks.
