LED supplement advice

A friend of mine has a diy led supplement on his 150 and it is amazing. I am looking to add some LED supplements to my tank.

It is a standard 120g tank. It is lit by an ATI 8x54 powermodule. I am not really concerned about the par. I just want the best pop for the buck. I am concidering either a 48" reef brite or a DIY 48" 3w x 24 led fixture w 70 degree optics. It would be mounted at the very front of the tank angled towards the back.

I am pretty sure that the Powermodule will overpower it during the day, but with just the actinics on I want that extra pop.

Any advice or other suggestions are welcome. I understand that it can be near impossible to photograph it. So I am just looking for someone who has used both.

I was thinking on the same line on my 125 I want to relplace my two 54w T-5 actinics wit htwo LED strips. BUT I want it to supplement during the day two for a little added pop. and for dusk to dawn .lighting I want to have a dimmable ballast so I can program my reefkeeper to start it low and ramp up to show them during MH lighting cycle and back down again in the evening.. I want mine to be in the same place as my T-5 are now...

LEDs are "like a box of chocolates" you never know what you may get.

Be careful which blue you add for colour pop.

The Cree XR-E Royal Blue Bin D316 works great, however there are other bins of the Cree Royal Blue that are more suited for a moonlight than an actinic pop in colour.

Make sure you specify Bin D316 for this LED. Other LEDs may have the same spectrum but this is the one I like and know the best. When you go DIY you can choose the parts to ensure you get the best results.

I added LEDs to my T5 HO retrofit light setup.I wanted That extra pop and I got it! Especially when just the LEDs are on. The corals just glow!
But when all the lights are on, you really can't tell the LEDs are on. I went with six 24" 1 watt blue strips. Each strip has 12 1 watt blue led. I found them at digits.com. For the price, I couldn't be happier! I got all this shipped for under 120 bucks!

Asking for D316 bins is a little specific isn't it? Suggesting a D3 DWL (Dominant wavelength) group is one thing, but the group 16 LEDs aren't as common. All the last two numbers are, are to determine the power output of the LED. Group 16's are the top end of the scale (min 500mW), but group 15 (min 425mW) and group 14 (min 350mW) are still viable, provided that they are still part of the D3 DWL group. If you are going to suggest people stick to a specific wavelength, then have them stick with D3XX royals.

I've been leaning towards a strip of ReefBrites myself for pop.... haven't heard anything new on the Econlux Plug and Play LED replacements?

i have a coralife fixture that i took the t5's out of and replayed with 2x48'' reefbrites.along with the 2x250w hm it looks awsome.but beware i lost about 1500.00 in corals when i changed .some coral just dont like leds.

I think you will be able to see the Reefbrites pop even with the PM on. I have one 36 inch RB on my 76 gallon Oceanic halfcircle. Tank is about 46 inches wide. Could get wider and better spread if elevated. A 48 may be enough for your tank, but 2 would be sweet. Like mine a lot.

I ended up going with the 24 3w from reefled.com. They are amazing and I am glad I went with them. The pop is off the charts.

Its the only Bin of Royal Blue XR-E I order and stock. I tried a couple of different Bins and I feel this one works the best with the Cool White and really makes the coral colour pop. Yes personal preference like Ginger vs Mary Ann.

As long as I order a bunch of these from the manufacturer can guarantee the Bin and I can be consistent with the product.
