I patched together a waterfall style ATS from scraps. Wanted to check with the experienced folks if these lamps would work? I already have them from my refugium.

Thought I would just put one on the ATS for now. Then take a second one of the refugium when/if I get some growth.

I have a 40g breeder refugium with 2 of these lights on the sides and 2 other lamps over top. It's works for no3 but if I would like to free up the space by switching to ATS.

I am wondering off these lamps are to intense, like create to much of a hot spot.

Thanks.

Those will definitely work, overkill if anything. Algae isn’t picky.

Like most the Amazon lights it's not really 450w. I think each cob is around 50w which they say is equivalent to 150w high pressure sodium. So 3 chips is 150w draw or equivalent to 450w hps. If I ever run into my kil a watt it would be interesting to test it's real draw.

Should be close to this ..
Working power 150+-5%W, 450W HPS/MH replacement while consuming only 150W with LED grow light.

What’s the screen size? About 50watts of blurple (each side) was about max on my 13x10 screen.

My screen is about 11x9. It's out of existing scraps to kind of get down the mechanics before committing on a nicer final ATS. Hoping this light will work out if this initial POC

I rerouted the spray bar. Most the water was coming down in an area the I had a little bump. Seems to be more uniform now. Also cut out a track in the side to be able to remove the mat and bar without having to lift up as I really don't have space above. Placed a screw on door with a gasket.

Had some lights like this previously, they started turning algae to mush. Photo period too long possibly.

Update. ATS has been running about 2 week now with a single light. Seems to be going well amazing how simple the are to buld. Running 10hr/day. Something is growing on the screen. In the burple light it looks like green hair algae but when the light is off it looks like brown slim. Guess we will see.

Longer term I'm looking at making a bit bigger ATS. This one's screen is about 11x9 looking at 18x9-10. I also want to pipe my calcium rx into it. The current ats was limited size as the local plastic shop sells scraps under 12" sq for a buck or 2. So the whole unit was $6. Any bigger will be a bit more. Decent prototype.

I am a bit skeptical that the ATS will eventually out compete the refugium. This is 2 weeks of refugium output. A heaping IO bucket full.

Slime / turf algae will outcompete chaeto. It’s about 5x more efficient at pulling nutrients. Physically, you will harvest / remove a smaller amount of turf algae compared to your bucket of chaeto, but nutrient wise the turf will be more dense

I had a basketball size farm of chaeto growing healthy and steady, and a small 6x2x2 scrubber killed off all the chaeto

Slime is the beginning stages and is extremely nutrient dense. Let slime cover most of the screen, then Remove slime, clean screen lightly with toothbrush. Will have to repeat this a few times before turf grows.

Leaving slime on too long inhibits turf growth and slows the scrubber from getting to the mature stage

See my write up here :)

My backup drain on the ATS seemed to be backed up today as the water has raised a bit in ATS. I haven't done anything with it since adding the second lamp. The lights have been running 6 hours a night each for a total of 12 hours, 6 hours per side. About half of my chaeto trimmed to mush a week ago. The screen and a lot of the inside of the ATS was completely covered. So I guess these lights were not to night to grow turf algae. Have to start doing regular maintenance of scraping the screen now

Some point I'm going to start planning a larger unit that maybe has a removable shelf.
