i agree most "orange crushes" are A. echinata but that one does not appear to be
A. bowerbanki seems a better fit due to the growth form

bowerbanki does seem right, and maxima also does, but remember i don't even know if there are many "true" maximas in the hobby considering they originate from an area where exporting and collection of corals is not allowed. so these morphs on diff acans and australomussas sometimes are called maximas cuz they look similar. now, i'm sure that some actually have access to true maximas somehow, so please don't take my comment as saying it is not a maxima. i'm only saying true ones are much harder to obtain. i was gonna say yours is an echinata from the start because of the colors alone, but the growth pattern is def different as most have stated on here. either way, it is a GORGEOUS piece i must say. best of luck with it

I hav a nearly identical coral that I have been trying to ID for a few years now. I have only seen this coral a few times for sale online. Oddly AquaSD has a few at any given point and they call them Unidentified Acan.. not much help. Update this if you learn anything new

It looks like a Maxima to me becasue that is what this one which is mine. I received it from a very reliable source which is what leads me to belive that it truly is a Maxima.

+1
it is generally agreed that the name A. maxima is a mis identification because it is an endemic species found only in Oman where collecting is not allowed

It looks like a Maxima to me becasue that is what this one which is mine. I received it from a very reliable source which is what leads me to belive that it truly is a Maxima.

see above - i'm not trying to disclaim your "reliable source" but it doesn't take much reseaech to discover that most corals ided as A. maxima are actually scolymia

here is an article by Julian Sprung about many of the mis id's that occure in the hobby ( A. maxima isn't directly mentioned but a couple nice pics of colonial scolys are in there)

http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/nov2003/invert.htm

also i remember a thread or artical somewhere that was discussing mussids in general and the difficulty in ID
so take your pick - A. bowerbanki, scolymia, australiamussa ect
sorry not much help except to say most likely isn't A. maxima

oh yeah - yes if you have a band saw and the specimen is healthy and well acclimated to your system fragging those babies off would be a breeze

bowerbanki. they tend to have a large center polyp and smaller polyps surrounding. echinatas have uniform polyps. it may be possible for it to be a maxima, but i lean toward the bowerbanki

Here's what mine looked like a few years ago.

untitled-1.jpg

this one is def a scoly - notice the upper ridge of dead skeleton (coraline covered now)
imagine the same sort of repro process that fungias undergo when damaged - multiple baby scolys is what you have there!
