The may do that, yes.

They may also hold nitrifiers that convert ammonia to nitrate and make it less desirable for corals to consume.

I wouldn’t use such media in most situations.

@Randy Holmes-Farley what are your opinions on Maxspect nano tech anaerobic blocks;

Could they be useful in a canister filter to bring down nitrates in a reef tank? Or is this chasing dreams?
Canister won't do anaerobic.....so you will be left with media that is saturated with nitrates, which will eventually lead to your DT registering high nitrates.....

Isn’t the anaerobic environment created within each chunk?

NOTE: Canister not listed

Trust me, I've been doing canisters for 40+ years....if there was something that removed Nitrates, I would have been all over it years ago......

What media would you recommend for a canister filter? A Fluval FX4 on a 200l reef set up what I’m thinking of.

I use 3 FX6's on my tank. Removed all (but last) sponge's and filled with LR rubble. The last sponge protects the motor/impeller in.
Clean Out is yearly.....quick rinse of LR Baskets and sponge in SW
Disassemble motor and clean.
Maybe no more than 20 minutes each filter.

EOD, what is it that you want to achieve? I wanted an extremely low-maintenance mixed reef, with very little risk of flooding as I am away alot.

My goal is exactly that, a self contained mixed reef with very low maintenance. I don’t have the space for a sump or skimmer.

Did you remove the long sponges that fit around the outside of the filter baskets? Do you fill that area with LR rubble aswell? What size rubble do you use?

I removed the long sponges and replaced with knitting mesh to create a basket. (Only really done to protect the impeller).
LR rubble was various sizes, but all smaller then 1.5".
Its now full of sponges, hydroids, copepods, etc....full of live.

In your opinion would these work as a suitable alternative for live rock rubble;

I’m trying to avoid using traditional live rock harvested from the ocean. I’m going to build all my rock work out of this;
