Hey everyone I think its time to start my build thread.
A little about me: I am a former full time photographer that partially closed my studio in 2020 due to that thing that happened. I went back to work in IT full time and now I am an IT Admin at a local university. I started with freshwater tanks back when I was a kid and then around 1987 or so I lived in South Florida. I used to go diving and catch all of my fish with a slurp gun and a bucket floating on the surface in an innertube+Flag. My tank at the time was a 125 gallon with undergravel filters (remember those?) and a pair of incandescent lights above. I had lion fish, an octopus for a while, puffer and a ton of Damsels and Sgt Majors, which I considered garbage fish because they were so plentiful. If one died I would just grab a couple more next time I went diving.
I then went into the navy and my parents sold all my stuff while I was gone when they moved. Move ahead 3 years ago and I start with freshwater tanks. Fully planted aquascapes and lots of various fish, but I missed the saltwater fish.
As a hobby I write reviews for Amazon and they send me things from time to time. They sent me an odd sized 60 gallon low iron glass tank. I asked the wife what she wanted to do with it and she said could we have a saltwater tank? Well, that did it, and here I am. As a photographer I like to tell stories with photos more than words so expect this thread to be full of pics.
The hobby is so so so different than in the 80s it took me about 2 months of just watching every BRS video I could find and a ton more on YouTube. I live in Rochester NY and one of the biggest stores we had closed shop before Halloween and while there are others around they are farther away. So, I will probably come here to ask for advice and assistance from time to time. Not sure if I should ask on this post or make new ones. I guess I will figure it out as I go. For now I will start adding pics of the build sofar and we will go from there.

Building the stand. We had some wood left over from 2020 when we built my studio behind the house. It was covered but thats why it looks a bit weathered. 2x6 are a bit overkill but I have literally tons of them so I used what I have. My wife is assisting me with the build because shes amazing at math ;)

Rough of the stand is built. Just testing the location. Its a 100 year old home so we had to be careful of placement. Right under that alcove there is a huge beam that runs perpendicular that can easily hold the weight. In my basement I setup the RODI and 2 30 gallon Brute trashcans with lids.

My son and I watched the BRS build video for making a negative space reef and had a go. This is what we made. Its superglued+Epoxied. This is the test fit.

Here is the infamous failed return line drilling fiasco of 2024. The other thread we sorted out a good fix. There is enough room in my sump to catch the water if the power goes out but for peace of mind I am going to add a standpipe to the current position by using a 3/4 street to 2.75" nipple that will raise the inlet to the return almost to the water line. Ill be posting the fix as it happens.

Here is the mockup layout of my sump. Its a 20 gallon tall from Petco. With it in the stand I have about 8" around if I shift it over which should be enough for my electronic doodads

I started my soak of the aquascape last week. The thermometer is 3 degrees off its 78 in there as tested by 2 other thermos. Once my ammonia was stable at 4 I popped in the MicroBacter.

The stand is complete. Now begins the plumbing to take the water from the display down to the sump underneath. Interior is white to assist with seeing what’s going on during maintenance. I think it came out ok considering my limited carpentry skills

I think I have found a good fix for my mistaken return drilling. I got a 90 degree street to a flexible split return nozzle. Each 3/4 fitting is screwed in as tight as I can make it and the first ball is equal with the lowest level of the intake. We did the math and with a 20 gallon tall sump where the hole was would fit all of the water that drained to that point but this now makes me feel better. I promised I would post the solution once I had it:

Ok with the final form sorted. Did a full tank test with zero leaks. The check valve was stuck from the factory. Ordering one that has a sight glass and is clear so I can see when its not closed. New one is a flapper which should work better than this one. Blue box is my pump controller. Just placed it here for the test and it will be going with my other electronics
