new lights

I am so excited. Have a reef radiance 165 P plus in the mail on its way. My first LED light. The t5's have been working so well all corals SPS to Softies growing and doing awesome. I'm pretty scared about the switch but I can't wait to see the colors. Any suggestion on how to switch the lighting? should I slowly switch from one to the other or just switch over night. also should I start with the LED bright or dim and work them up?

I just told my other forum that I had bought this flight. A pretty experienced reefer informed me that these lights do not have the proper amount of you uvA and uvb light. He said they will not work on their own well and insisted that I run my t5s with them. Can anybody help me with how true this is?I feel like crap now.

Your experienced reefer lacks experience with this light!! These lights GROW corals!! These lights make coral colors pop!!
Please read any and all threads/post that mention the DM-165p+ There are several. People are ordering 1-2-3 of these units just because they are that good. Don't just take my word for it. RESEARCH!!

Hi Wiz, I hear and read many-many opinions on forums regarding lights and it seems that every " experienced reefer" has the right plan on how lights must work to grow coral. The one thing I have learned from 5 years of designing leds lights for reef aquariums - is that there is not a single thing a light must have to grow coral - it is a symphony of many factors that not only grow coral but make your tank look good. Just like good water quality in your tank is not just one thing - but a result of many things - in proper balance. Exactly what UV nanometer led is he suggesting that would grow coral? I would be very interested in his answer to this. If he says you need a T5 in addition to our lights - then what he is saying is that white light that you get in a T5 led has UV - or is capable of producing it in conjunction with our leds? If that is the case - then the white leds in our lights contain the same spectrum as any bulb type of light - T5 or otherwise - and will grow coral just as well. I would ask him if he has ever used this light - or any of our lights - over coral and has firsthand experience in what they will - or wont grow. I would imagine he has not or he would know that the DM-165p+ and every one of our lights will grow coral amazingly well. And you might want to read the thousands of posts on the forums stating this - from people who have actually used them. Don't feel bad - just send me ( and your forum friend) pictures of your coral growth under this amazing light.

Hate to be a bummer, but I would stick with the T5's or at least try to integrate them into the LED's as a combo system.* Cheap LED's are precisely that.* These systems are the Chinese Evergrow systems and may or may not have UV chips.* If they do not dome with UV already, you may be able to have them added to the array, but the efficiency of UVA and UVB in common inexpensive LED systems is not as good as T5 yet.* For a quality LED system that incorporates proper UV spectrum look into Radion and Kessil.

Sorry man!* Like I said, wasn't tryin' to be a bummer, LOL!The problem with the LED's has been that it takes a long time to see the negatives.* You are likely to see a lot of people online post very positive reviews with the excitement of a new item and then when they see the negatives six month's to a year later rarely post information saying that they made a mistake.* Especially if there may be a spouse or some other potential "told ya so!" lurking out there.*I have had no experience directly with Reef Radiance, but the product is literally made by evergrow.* The same thing with Reef Breeders which us another popular distributor of this light fixture.* We brought in a bunch of these fixtures from Evergrow a year or two ago and had them made with a custom array with more expensive UV chips in them.* They were pretty good for the most part with a couple of issues in some of the fixtures right out of the box.* We still have them over a couple of our freshwater clients tanks, but have removed them from our reef clients tanks and upgraded to Kessil and T5 combo's or Kessil only set ups where the T5's don't fit.

From what I have seen people are having way better results from the evergrow units compared to the insanely expensive units (Radion etc)

I'd just like to say that it is hard for me to spend a lot of money on things. I am not even close to wealthy. But I want my reef to do awsome. It kills me to have my pets in agony. So I did a lot of reading about this light. And reviews. And I found nothing bad. That's why I chose to purchase it. I got a lil concerned because this guy has been in home reef maitenence for 20+ years and a lfs owner. So I assume he has more experience with these things than most. I meant no harm in repeating his comment s. But where better to go to find the truth. So as I change over to the 165p+ I will most defanitly post my experience. Hopefully to prove these comments wrong and endorse the value that got me my leds! :-)

Oh... so the guy that was going to sell you thousands of dollars worth of light told you this? One thing I have learned over the years is that typically the people in the business end of this hobby know the least. That doesn't go for every business, but more often than not this is the case.

I have the lumtek pro 120 over my 25 gallon reef tank that i got from reefradiance. My tank is astonishing With his lights and i can back that up.

I don't think this guy is like that. He is very nice. And knows that I buy online. Cheaper. So it was not for a sale. He has helped me many times. He might have had bad experience with older models or something else. Idk. But I really don't believe he is trying to undercut the maker. Also he has been maintaining tanks for 20+ years. He opened the lfs a couple years back. So his experience is in maintaining many tanks for clients which would boast his knowledge if he's succesful. Which he is. Not saying he's right. Just that I don't believe he's blowing smoke to get a sale.

How long have you been running it? Just curious. And it alone or in conjunction with other lighting?

It looks great. But without knowing how long you have run the lumatek I can't get anything from these. How long has it been on. Do you run other lighting with it? Did you start with it or switch from other lighting? If so how long did you run each? "Need more input" ~johnny 5. Lol
