Hello

Firstlyi sorry about mu English, it is not my mother tongue.

After researching for a couple of months, I decided to set up a reef aquarium. Agreed with a local guy to provide and set up the whole system. Along the way, there was some missteps and i have a feeling we did something wrong. If it is the case, I'd like to reset sooner than later. So any opinions/suggestions are welcome;

first my setup;
80 cm X 60 cm X 50 cm main tank (about 80 gallon with sump)
Bubble magus curve A8 PS
Maxspect RSX 150w
Jebao sw 8 wavemaker
Jebao DCT 8000 pump

here is what me and my guy did;

- Tank arrived. I started filling it up with RO water. It took for 4 days. While it was filling, I washed the sand multiple times (last one with ro water) and put it in.

- My guy added the salt to the water. But he forgot the bring the heater, so the water was cold (about 68 °F). Also he added some bacteria culture. Whole system ran including the protein skimmer. After 5-6 hours, when the water cleared , i put the fiji rocks in. Water was not crystal clear, it was a little cloudy.

- After running like that for 2 days (still no heater, the guy said it was no problem), I saw a leak in the water pipe, so i had to shut down the pump and the ps for 2 days. Problem solved. Water was still a little cloudy. PS gathered some sand and dirt and went silent.

- on the 3rd day finally my heater arrived (eiheim jager 300 w). The guy added active carbon and some fiber to the filter section of the sump. PS went wild for a while then calmed down. Heater was set to 77°F (but later I learned that jaggers have a calibration problem).

- system run like that for 2 days. I was away. When i came back at last nighr, I saw that water was actually 84°F. In panic, I pulled the heater out. (water still cloudy)

- this morning, I checked the tank before leaving for work. Water was cold again but pretty much clear ( not cloudy, as clean as it ever was) . I have no idea it this is good or bad :) also Ps cup was full but there was no dirt in it. Previously it was quite still.

- At work, i googled and learned about the famous jagger calibration problem. I'll put the heater back later this evening.

So, any of the mistakes above are serious? Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks in advance

Adding the salt into the tank after it was full of R/O water is not ideal. You are probably having trouble dissolving the salt, which might be the cloudiness, cloudiness might also be the sand. Since you don't have anything alive in there, you aren't killing anything with mistakes, so it's not a big deal if the temperature swings, but it's not helping your cycle at all, you need to cycle with the tank stable.

I would start by getting some kind of external temperature controller for the heater, and a good refractometer. By post-mixing the salt like that, it's really hard to tell if you have proper salinity at all. You should always pre-mix salt in a bucket or something, and then add to the tank, never mix it in-tank.

Don't add anything living to the tank until you've got everything stabilized for awhile. Just give it time, don't rush things.

thanks ! I'll fix the temp issue this evening. I have a good refractometer and salinity is 1023. I'm in no rush, just afraid that if temp changes messed things up (water becoming clear just after temp went down worried me a little :))
I'm not dosing anythig, just the bacteria in the first set up (water was cold). Should I?

Welcome aboard!

It's difficult to mix saltwater before you put it in a tank with volumes above 50 gallons or so. Since you aren't using live sand or live rock, it's ok to mix it in the tank. Just know that it will be a week before the salinity settles in. Especially if you don't have an auto topoff.

you've given us good information to go on.

Definitely get a heater controller.

Above all else: Have fun!

Heater is fixed, the water is crystal clear now :) I'm thinking about using Prodibio - Start Up, do you guys recommend it?

here is an old pic of the tank. I'll get some new ones.
I think it needs some more rocks.

I'm waiting but so far I added nothing to the water except the bacteria at the start. I had difficulty on finding ammonia test in my town but now it is on its way along with Prodobio Start up. I'll check the water for ammonia. I suspect it will be zero. So should i go with shrimp, wait a couple of days and add prodobio start up?
