Hello,

I’d like to share my first adventure with saltwater aquariums.
I had (and still have) a small freshwater aquarium and I was fascinated when I started seeing saltwater aquariums. Since then, I began thinking about building one, much larger than my current freshwater setup.
My choice ended up being a NYOS G2 300 G2, which I think sits right in the middle, not too big, not too small, and fits perfectly in the space I had for it.

The aquarium is currently almost 5 weeks old, and I’ve just bought the first two inhabitants, a pair of clownfish.

I also created another threads, and I’d like to thank this community in advance for the help, as it has already assisted me with several questions that came up.

In terms of equipment, I’m satisfied with what I’ve bought so far. I’ll just leave a few notes for anyone who might be interested in buying the same equipment in the future:

  • The return pump is not silent. I had already seen this mentioned here on the forum, but I still decided to buy it. I think I’ve gotten used to the hum now, but at the beginning it bothered me a bit. Other than that, it works perfectly and should be running at just over 50% of its maximum.
  • I haven’t used the skimmer yet, so I can’t give any feedback.
  • I couldn’t connect the wavemakers via Wi-Fi, fortunately the physical controllers are quite intuitive. Other than that, they work perfectly, and not having wires inside the aquarium is a big plus for me.
  • The lights are extremely powerful and seem very good, but I’d still like to point out two negative aspects. The first is the app, it’s terrible. Terrible for setting light spectrum (fortunately there’s the online Beananimal Profile Generator). Terrible because if I need to make any changes and access the app, it sometimes loses the connection and it’s difficult to reconnect (I’ve already had to do a factory reset). The second issue is that the fan noise is quite noticeable when they heat up.
  • The ATO: I was worried that the nano version wouldn’t be enough to replace evaporated water, but it’s more than sufficient and only runs for a few seconds at a time.
  • The 300W heater has been doing its job, but on the coldest night I’ve had so far, it couldn’t keep the temperature above the defined minimum and the Inkbird alarm went off in the middle of the night. It wasn’t a big drop, just a few tenths of a degree, so I don’t think it’s anything to worry about. In any case, this is the largest heater I can fit in the sump, so the only alternative would be to install two heaters, but I’d need another Inkbird.
I’ll try to keep this thread alive and updated. For now, I’d appreciate your help with the stocking plan:

2x Clownfish ----------------------- purchased
3x or 5x Green Chromis-------- in 2 weeks
1x Cleaner Shrimp---------------- in 2 weeks
1x Tailspot Blenny---------------- in 4 weeks
1x Citrinis Clown Goby---------- in 4 weeks
1x Blood Red Fire Shrimp------ sometime further in the future
1x Filefish---------------------------- sometime further in the future
1x Wrasse (suggestion?)-------- sometime further in the future
1x Coral Beauty-------------------- sometime further in the future
1x Mandarin Dragonet---------- sometime further in the future

These are my plans for the future.
Are there any issues with this stocking list in terms of number of animals, compatibility, or order of introduction into the aquarium?
I know the Filefish and Coral Beauty may eat corals, and I still need to think about whether the risk is worth it.
I’d love to have a Radiant Wrasse or a Melanurus Wrasse, but they seem to be for more experienced aquarists. Any suggestions or alternatives for a wrasse?

Regarding corals, I don’t plan to add them anytime soon, until the aquarium matures a bit, but the final goal is a mixed reef.

Thanks to the forum in advance for all the help so far.

Wishing everyone a great year.

Just to update my post:
  • I added 3 Chromis to the 2 clownfish.
  • My sand and rocks are starting to turn brown (it doesn’t show very well in the photos). Is this the ideal time to add part of the CUC? Some snails and copepods?
  • In the skimmer compartment of the sump, the water surface is covered by a layer of something I’m not quite sure what it is. Is it necessary to use a pump or gyre to disturb the surface?
  • I still haven’t turned on my skimmer. My nitrates are between 2 and 5. Is it still too early to use it?

Today my aquarium turns 3 months old.

I’m starting to notice some red patches on the sand and brown and green coloration on the rocks, but I’m not sure what those ‘plants’ attached to the rocks are. Can you help me identify what they might be?

Nitrates: between 2 and 5
Phosphates: 0.09

Would this be a good time to finally turn on the skimmer?

Livestock:
- 2 clownfish
- 3 green chromis
- 1 Lysmata amboinensis
- 9 snails
