are you an employer?? my question pertains to Phoenix University..

if you have two candidates applying for a job and one has a BS from a State College and the other from Phoenix do you give preference to the State College candidate?
basically whats your view of candidates from Phoenix?

Well when I was doing hiring for my support team at Microsoft we ran into this alot. The college scene is changing and more people are required to work to get through college. Because of this, online courses have become popular as they are able to fit into sometimes really crappy work schedules. Also not all physical colleges are all in-class schooling either as they offer many classes online as well to save on space costs and cater to the evolving generation.

When coming to this as a decision making point I would go ahead and ask the needed questions to guage their competence in the duties they will perform. Whoever answers the interview questions better or gives you better information related to their experiences is who I would go with. Don't let yourself make a judgement call on whether or not the classes were online. HR ideas need to evolve with the rest of the population.

Keep in mind, my hiring was all done in technology related fields. Online courses were not seen as any different than normal classes and I judged based on merit, not the school they went to.

I do hiring interviews for software engineers. I don't think we've seen candidates come through with online degrees yet. That said, even though we have opinions about the various schools we get candidates from, we'll always give an applicant a shot at our interviewing process if we have appropriate openings. If you want some perspective from "the other side", we've found this to be a good interviewing play book:

The Guerrilla Guide to Interviewing (version 3.0) - Joel on Software

I personally don't have a preference on if a candidate attended an online university or went through a traditional brick-and-mortar school. The persons level of education should become apparent in an interview... you are not going to select a substandard candidate just because he or she attended a traditional school.

However, in my time I have seen many hiring managers dismiss an online education as if the person had no education at all, but many of those same people bash the local universities as well... I think to make themselves feel better about forking out significant cash to attend an ivy league school.

Thank you for the great responses . I'm looking into finishing college and wondering what people/employers think.
