My tank was predrilled sometime in it's past life before making it to my hands. Does the tank need an overflow box? or is this okay like this? does it need some kind of vent added to stop a suction sound? I find myself constantly fighting with the flow/return and keeping proper levels inside the sump and display.

oh boy, that's an example of what not to do. Looks like you only have the one overflow with a strainer, correct? Before you worry about the noise, I would find a way to get a second emergency overflow in there with no strainer. The way this is currently set up will cause your tank to overflow when that strainer inevitably gets plugged up.

Edit: You technically don't need an overflow box, but they hide all the plumbing and help keep larger debris from getting into the overflows. You may want to look at different types of overflows including the herbie and bean animal.

I would not say it is a need but you will likely be happier with the box. It will get you better surface skimming and could help you add a muffler. for sound. I also see the drain valve closed off. You should never, ever, ever restrict the drain on a single overflow system. It is a flood waiting to happen.

Thank you for the information guys! I'm going to see if i can make a overflow box work, from what i've been reading that will help me have a stable water level also.

Thank you!
