One thing to keep in mind, par is kinda relative to nutrients And alkalinity. So the exact same coral in an ULNS may need less light than one in a high nutrient tank.
So finding your own sweet spot is pretty important.

Knowing what your levels are in the tank can be handy if you need or want to move stuff in the tank.

Myself , when I only had the lux meter I made a basic estimate of the top of the tank and went with it. Never touched the led settings really for a couple years.
That works too.

I've had an Apogee PAR meter for many years. It's old, it's simple and it still works like clockwork!
 
I have an Apogee 510. I have made lots of friends loaning it out and have gotten access to a few high-end coral frags before other people - returning the favor. You might use it more than you think to check the level of any particular coral that you might not like the color or growth of. This can be especially helpful using puck-style LEDs where the "cone" of light is more intense than the surrounding areas.
