phosphate remover ????

just wondering what brand of phosphate remover you guys run in your reactors? also how many of you guys run one or do you think it is even necessary?

Brightwell Extrax Phos

Works great in a media reactor and you can leave it in there for up to a month unlike the Kent kind which is 48hrs.

Their Phosphate-E also works really well, but I prefer the reactor way.

If you have a phosphate problem to begin with it is a lot cheaper to use a product like phosBuster from Caribsea to bring it to zero then do the GFO to maintain it there. BTW, the dual reactor from Bulk Reef Supply is sweet just installed it a week ago and water is super clear and I'm seeing algae comming off the rocks.

That looks like a pretty decent setup, was checking it out. How much phosphate and carbon does it hold?

We've had excellent results with any of the GFO's. Started with Rowaphos, also used phosban, puraphos, etc. If it looks like coffee grounds, it's the stuff you want to use. We've in general avoided the aluminum based ones - they look like small white pebbles as there's reported issues with the aluminum causing problems with clams etc.

As far as a reactor vs bag, you'll get much more efficient use of the media, and faster action out of a reactor. To reduce the problems with using it in a bag, massage the bag every few days to redistribute the media so you're getting more than just the outer media exposed to the water passing around the bag.

I would say about 4 cups in each one. I really pack both of them full. Never really measured though.

You shouldn't pack the GFO full, it is supposed to gently tumble. I usually fill my GFO about half full, and fill the carbon up most of the way.

There is enough space for me to be able to see it tumble.
