Not sure what it is about drop off tanks but each and every one I have seen is mesmerizing - pico or public aquaria and everything in between

Also am a former diver and now avid snorkeler and love cruising turtle grass beds out to rock out croppings then to the drop-offs.

Have a nearly 2 year Cade 180 (am told it was one of the first delivered here - thanks again Samantha) which has survived 2 of my early self imposed setbacks to now being stable and growing torches to millies and most everything between. Clearly the Cade is a great large tank for someone not experienced in advanced custom tank design - planning and construction. That is me.

Do have a friend/local LFS owner/set up specialist to help with the possible upcoming project.

So I seek advice from others for what would be the tank to take me to the end; to disabuse me of the folly or help encourage the dream (or something in-between I hadn't thought of).

Have a 3 step drop off sketched out - shallow reef, to mid reef to drop off. I have looked around and not found such design except poorly photo'd shots from EU

Was thinking 24DX24LX18H to 24DX48LX36H to 24DX24LX48H.

Where it would go in downstairs family room (where the cade is) is not well laid out for a peninsula - but still plotting that. It does however have easy access to a single wall transition to the current fish room for a sump.

Have contacted a regional tank designer with no feedback yet, but would like to be able to react intelligently when talking to them or the next guy.

So please, if this has major systemic flaws, or simple concepts that I need to be aware of, let me know what you think

Since your talking about your dream tank for life I would get everything exactly how you want it. As for size, go a little bigger than your thinking, look for pics of others tanks that resemble what your looking for (you've probably already doing that) to get some ideas for the tank, sump etc. that maybe you might like better. And finally once you've got everything ready to go, fill it up and enjoy your dream tank. PS, if $ is not much of an issue get everything exactly how YOU want it. Looking forward to pics of the tank you settled on.

thanks
really trying to gauge the 2 drop/3 depth design - have not been able to find hardly any picture - not for esthetics, but for function/flow/fundamentals - will talk to the builders - but thanks...

I have not seen anything like this either but sounds fantastic. So 8' total length?

I am also dreaming up my next/last tank and would love a dropoff. I'm was more in line with a single and 6' design.

Can't wait for the build thread!

roughly works out to 350G - and yes - floor is taped for 8 ft - smile
tough challenge I guess will be placement of the overflows
fun challenge will be 3 sets of lights(?) and types of flow
want the shallow bed to be nearly eye level
