Potential swim bladder infection?

Hey all, Had my Naoko’s Wrasse for about a week. He’s been fine until today. He’s now having issues swimming. Half swimming and half being pushed around by flow. Mostly in a head pointing straight up orientation. My first thought was a swim bladder related issue? Or possibly an injury from jumping. Although I have yet to see him jump and he’s hasn’t been stressed. Eating fine and all water parameters are good. There is a little white thing sticking out near his head. Too big for ich to me. Sry for the poor pic quality. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

He didn’t eat this morning. Can’t really control himself well enough. This evening I’ll turn off all the flow and try a few sinking pellets.

does he try at least to grab the food?

The video does seem like UNWD.

@Jay Hemdal what do you think? I know it trying to feed is the biggest hallmark of UNWD.

This fish is quite thin and may be having issues since you acquired it and slowly deteriorating and UNWND Not caused by physical trauma also a possibility and if true, you which shows neurological symptoms where it either cannot swim well, swims tail down or swims with a bent spine and despite all this, the wrasse will still attempt to feed and display no damage such as crashing into objects. Other could be depending where fish is from, cyanide capture which is delayed but the fish ends up in this state

I just tried feeding. He’s aware of the food and attempts to grab it. I can’t say he’s getting much though.

Gotcha, definitely UNWD then.

There is nothing you can do unfortunately.

Hopefully I am wrong and @Jay Hemdal has better news

I was unaware of UNWD. Seems spot on… My first wrasse and such a pretty fish Appreciate your input.

Yea I love Naokos.

I lost mine due to it jumping into the overflow. I had a lid on.

Such a shame, sorry about the loss

I guess the question now is what to do? Let him be or is there a proper way euthanize a fish?

If you do want to euthanize, clove oil is best. Up to you.

I’d keep him around for a bit longer just in case

Not a sufficient diet , but if eating now, there is a chance. Shutting down from feeding is not in the right direction.

I don’t think this is UNWD, in the video, I can see some skin tags under its head that look like damage from running into something in the tank.

Well, UNWD is identified by a fish that tries to eat, swims oddly, but doesn't show any signs of physical trauma. Your fish is showing the first two symptoms.

I did start reading that post. Good information and I had never heard of UNWD before this. Thanks! Curious as to why it seems to happen to “newly acquired wrasses”?

As one person mentioned the fish does have a noticeable “skin tag” near the head. That was absolutely not there yesterday. Fish was acting completely normal then. Not sure what caused it. Could have resulted from being tossed around after symptoms appeared.
