Probably stupid question about gate valve

Hello, I have what is probably a stupid question regarding gate valves. I am adding a gate valve to my return line in my sump to vent off some of the pressure so the drain isn't so close to it's capacity. This is my first time using a gate valve, so excuse my ignorance. The gate valve I bought (not sure if they're all like this) has the "top" that is removable - it threads on or off. It removes the knob and "gate" from inside the valve, I assume to allow for replacement later. Now, my question is where it threads on and off, do I need to pvc glue or teflon tape this area to prevent leaks? Or am I good to tighten it down snug and get a leak free install?

If I understand your gate valve description, no—definitely no PVC cement on the thread and no Teflon tape. In fact you shouldn’t use Teflon tape on any plastic threads. It is designed for metal pipe threads as a lubricant when tightening.

This isn't the exact gate valve I purchased, but it is similar in design. That top piece threads off with the knob and the "gate" from inside.

You don’t need to do anything with those threads, you should just make sure it is on tight.

There should be an o ring inside for water sealing. Whatever you do, never use glue on any valve as it will sieze it in that position.

Agreed! I work for Spears manufacturing and we make gate valves there should be an Orting that seals that and keeps it from leaking.
