I'm back, after too many years out of the hobby I pulled the trigger and getting ready to jump back in. Due to an unexpected move years ago, I was forced to sell-off my beloved reef and but the hobby on the back seat. I built my first reef in 2002, managed a reef shop, built and owned a reef shop, then went back to being a hobbyist(which I enjoy most). My son now turning 12 I've been looking for sometime for a complete system at a reasonable price to dive back in with.

This past weekend the search came to an end. After talking to a gentleman from southern NY, which is about an hour north of me, I made the decision to buy his dry reef. We made a plan for pickup and set the date for Sunday morning. When the day came, I woke my son up and we took the ride to bring home our new reef. This system has been dry for about 6 months, but has almost everything we need to start back up rather easily.

My vision for the reef is very different from my prior tanks. As the name suggests, I have an SPS addiction, at one time it was rather severe and complex, but I'm a changed man! For this reef, I am picturing a mixed reef with a trend. Lots of zoas down bottom, I'm thinking hornets, lakers, eagle eyes, candy apples, and maybe bowsers. On the lower part of the mid section, I am going to try to go with some euphyllies, bi-color frogspawn, torches, and a hammer. In the upper mid section, I am going to do a few leathers, I used to have a blue toadstool that I loved. The upper section is going to be saved for acros, pink lemonade, green slimer, strawberry fields.

I've never grown a tank for all frags, no colonies at all, and that is something I am going to try to stick with as much as possible. I'd really like to try to find some of the old school designer corals that were some of my favorite from back in the day. Part of the vision is to have a lot of movement in the tank, which is why I am going to put the euphyllias and leathers in the mid section.

For the aquaculture, the rock scape was created by a gentleman in PA, David Chandler of ChandlerRocks. It's made up of 4 pieces that fit together, all drilled for frag plugs, with a ton of negative space due to no rock piling at all, which I love. Couldn't be happier with the rock scape.

Yesterday was interesting, couldn't figure out what was up with the RODI unit I got with the package. Seemed like the lines were switched on the membrane canister, and thanks to the R2R family, I got the answer quickly and was able to move forward through that! Also added a pressure gauge and barrel style flow restrictor to the RODI unit.

Big day on the reef today. Finished making the water this morning, the tank is filled and the return pump is running. It does have a good hum to it, so that's gonna have to get swapped out.

Water is up to temp, the live sand was added, and I added two bottles of Fritze Zyme 9. Still lots of sand in the water column, hoping most of that clears up overnight.

I am new to the hobby and doing research before purchasing my first tank, but am super interested in the ProStar 90. The only thing that looks challenging to me is the sump size/orientation, though I have 0 experience haha. Are you planning on using the sump it came with or do you have any issues with it?

Thanks so much and hopefully I’ll be in your same spot this time next year!

I actually really like the sump design, it keeps it very simple. Plan on running a SRO Classic 110SSS as a skimmer, I have an extra, shoot me a message if interested.

Under the filter media cups you have room for a dozen or so Bio blocks.

The downfall of these new tanks is the feet on the stand, they all have them and I'm not a fan.

Thanks so much. Went by an LFS that uses them as their display tanks for selling fish/corals. Definitely decent tanks and appear unbeatable for the price.

I'm now looking toward larger (200 or even 230) to allow for growth of fish like Tomini tang and foxface. Greatly appreciate the input.
