Question About Privacy At R2R

We have murder and theft along with other unspeakable crimes all around us. Sure it's not the same thing but just because something is going on all around us does not mean we should just roll over and accept it as the new norm.
I know this type of stuff is going on and us complaining here is not going to change things. But it is nice to have some like minded people complain together, it bonds us :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes:

true, but taking somebodies life is a big big comparison, theft is a good one tho, cuz it is theft. I completely agree with u! companies try and make us accept it, but we shouldn't.
and this is why this community is so active, cuz so many people bond over the things we love!! :D

Viewing this thread objectively, I certainly understand people's concerns. I scrubbed all my social years ago as its not my speed anyways. Joined insta after a couple years of hesitation and only use it for coral related things...and very reluctant even then. I wouldn't appreciate looking at a site on another's computer and then said person gets an email about it. Several things ive never considered have come to light as what I thought to be a simple email at the beginning. Knowing in hindsight how someone feels is different than going in with bad or nefarious intentions. I know Shane well enough to know he's a great guy that loves this hobby and genuinely tries to help reefers succeed. While many vendors were, are and have been secretive about techniques of growing coral in the past..he was one of the first to lay it out for anyone to follow. This shows and speaks to good character. While I dont agree with the marketing/open-source thing shooting an email without opting in...it doesn't mean there was ill intent in doing so.

I agree no ill intent but out of all the sites I visited while at my parents for a week my dad only got one email.

Understand. The entire site was updated and redone like 3 or 4 months ago. Being that it's newer it's probably why...just how marketing is evolving. Personally it didn't seem like a big deal until I read some of people's concerns. But this why an open dialog is healthy to have. If I started a new site I may tell the marketing folks to "give me the works" not fully understanding the ramifications...or even thinking there would be any.

But with software like sbb is using, what have I jeopardized by viewing the site at work!? does it just troll for emails? would it search for other data? I haven't gotten anything from them to my work email, but that doesn't mean it wasn't mined. And of greater importance, what of patient's health data!?

Your situation concerns me as well. I get that IP is a collection of data, but it seems to me like invasive hacking for anyone getting access to that data beyond being the internet provider or some permissible legal/governmental situation.

That situation reminded me of the time I learned directly through my cousin that smartphones are listening to conversations and responding with algorithms:
We were talking one evening while on a walk and I brought up some situation from years prior where I had a conversation about using wool as house insulation. Definitely not a commonplace consideration in America today.
The very next morning, my cousin sent me a screenshot of an advertisement for wool purposed for house insulation. Neither of us ever looked online for anything related, just talked about it while he had his phone on in his pocket.

I've got some of my personal safeguards against online data, but now apparently I need to consider what I say near anyone with a phone on their person...

It is even worse in your case that your father's email was collected simply because you used his internet.

I'm sure many of us have access to some pretty sensitive stuff. As much as I trust my company's, and the software company's firewalls, but I should still do my part to protect it.

I did not think of this until now! My primary internet use is on breaks at work. My company got hacked once before a few years ago and ended up with an accountant making a series of payments in excess of a million dollars to a scammer that used a fraudulent email in the guise of a company we worked with and claiming that we had not sent a prior payment. They tracked the accountant's email for a couple months to garner the information to perpetrate the scam. Thankfully, we were able to recover most of the payments upon discovering the scam and have better anti-theft and anti-scam services now.

I'm alert/familiar enough to watch out for scam emails, but apparently now my browsing could potentially give away other company emails? I'll have to up protections.

Scam emails come quite regularly to my school email. they are obvious and get tagged pretty quick. but simply browser history causing a breach is scary!

You might not like the method, but its valid.

You can google privacy focused browsers ... they might help a little if you're really concerned about this.... But the reality is that there's big money in putting together these massive databases of digital fingerprints, and if opensend can match the visitor up to a profile with an email address successfully, it clearly works enough that SBB is making more money out of these leads than they are paying for the service.

This thread got me curious about the event I mentioned a few posts back. I went and found the old deleted email. It was a group called SafeOpt. They are aggregating data from a few thousand companies they supply data to in order to also supply the email address of visitors to websites.

You can go to safeopt and ask them to delete your data, but I don't know if they actual do that, or just double the amount of people they sell you to.

valid or not, i do not like these methods and find it shady. so i personally would choose not to do business with a vendor that i find out is using them, until i hear otherwise.

You're definitely entitled to your opinion.

They are just collecting publicly available information to build digital fingerprints of people.

Should it be legal or not? always in debate... But it is legal today, even though we're trying to make improvements to privacy.

It is also largely a problem driven by the fact that we all use these free services, and they need to do something to make money. Your, my, everyone's information = money. So you don't pay anything for a gmail address, but google is going to use that info to make money.

IE, nothing is really free.
