VPNs are fairly useless in this context. It is not your IP that is the primary key, it is just a data point. The rest of the mountain of other clickstream data ties you to you. Again, beyond the scope of this conversation, but crazy stuff.

Google and The rest of them aren’t building massive data centers for search results or hosting, the bulk of it is data mining in one form or another other.
Don't forget the government's huge data warehouses.

And the entire focus is on how they can better sell stuff to us, that is THE end goal. I mean, what SBB did is a drop in the hat to the data collection, algorithms, and personalized marketing that "big tech" uses. Again, I get that, I do lol!

Where's that shaking fist gif???

Yes i thought it was funny. Lots of experience you have. Thanks for letting everyone know.
I still don’t see the humor, just the troll, and a lame one at that.

Yes, I have direct experience in this subject. I mentioned it for the sake of giving context to my post and separating from random opinion.

“Hi, I am a doctor, you should have that looked at.”

“Hi, I build race cars. You will want to use a billet crankshaft for a build like that”

“Hi, I have experience knitting, those are the wrong size needles for what you are trying to do.”

Bigger than just monetization. Data ultimately is power…. Tinfoil included or not.

I don’t sing or dance well, can’t draw anything more than (bad) stick figures and don’t spell very well…. And that is just a start. I struggle with many things, but try to learn everyday.

Thank you for the kind words.

Well I'm sure in time you'll figure all that out :)

Thanks again for your replies here!

I can tell you all about trolls, but since you are the expert I’d love to know what you know about them. I’m more impressed by the things people say than their credentials. A lot of people with credentials are disappointing the world right now. But anyway.

I agree with you there.

If you feel that my statements are untrue, feel free to challenge them in conversation. I have no issue explaining my point or answering questions about my understanding of this subject.

Yes there are now, and always have been those who are credentialed and/or use pretense to portray themselves as experts, who are far from that. Life is graded on a curve my friend. For every brilliant doctor or mechanic or engineer or lawn care professional or teacher. There is one who has no business being in the trade. Hopefully we mostly end up with those on the right side, but the law of averages says that is not the case.

I literally just said to tell me about it, really. People think I’m crazy if I talk about it. Maybe they will take it seriously coming from you.

I used to have an old roommate that was a self-professed expert in sports. I always thought, what a cool, cool guy. I mean, I'd love to be a self-professed expert in something, but I don't know enough stuff for that :winking-face:

EDIT: Nor do I have the hubris to pretend :)

Did he really know a lot? Some folks absorb information like a sponge in subjects that interest them.

LOL! I don't know, I'm not a huge sports fan myself as an adult, though I have nothing against any of it.

But truth be told, I'm not sure that roommate was an expert in anything at all lol!

Actually, they did in fact ignore me and refused to answer my inquires about how they got my email (except a "sorry that happened" reply). It was not until I got the R2R mods involved and they contacted SBB did I get the reply about the software they are using. So that actually speaks to them being shady and secretive, and they know what they are doing is at the least unethical or they would have told me about it when I first asked them.

OK, sure, and I dare say you'd be a creep for doing it lol!

I fully understand nothing is secure anymore, but you simply cannot add someone to a business email marketing list without their permission, and I'm seriously shocked by what SBB is doing here.

There's no mystery as to what happened. SBB is using a piece of software on their website called Opensend that when someone just visits their website for more than 20 seconds, it collects your personal data, and automatically signs you up for their mailing list. That's what happened to me.
waaiiittt this happened with SBB? I visited their site as well and started getting emails from them.. I was confused but ultimately figured I entered my email at some point.. but now it all makes sense because I really don't remember giving them my info!!

No, you didn't enter anything. SBB literally stole your info.

Again, this has now devolved into a thread of an old man (me!) shaking their fist at the sky.

But I stand by the now exposed idea that this is unscrupulous and unethical business practices, and I won't give SBB even a dollar for a filter sock. Again, good thing I don't use filter socks :winking-face:

@Daniel@R2R

How come I can never pull you into a thread?

I'm not trying to make a big deal out of this, but please watch your vendors!

I'm sure he's well aware of this issue.

I am sorry this happened to you. It's unfortunate that sbb tried to hide the fact that they were using it. That's what I am most disappointed about. I don't really care that much that they use something to gather user data, because that's just our new reality. I understand the point that you are coming from, and you have evey right to be mad.
