So I've scoured the wide world of the interwebs and have not been able to find a conclusive answer to this question: are the red mangroves currently growing in my refugium safe for non-finned friends? I have a few cats that fancy a nibble on plants every so often and I cannot find any info out there stating whether or not the red mangrove is toxic to dogs/cats... I ask as i would love to eventually have them in my DT or out in the open, but not if they're poisonous. I've check the ASPCA website and Red Mangroves are not listed. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

I've had my cats terrorize my mangrove as well as other house plants, never see them get ill other than puking up bits and pieces of plant material. I don't think they have actually eaten the mangrove leaves, just bitten them.

I keep my mangroves away from the cats, more for the health of the mangrove, they grow really slow.

I hear ya..... We have spider plants and a ponytail palm that we find remains of leaf ends lol. I’ve heard that mangrove foliage is quite bitter so hopefully that’ll act as a deterrent.... hopefully being the key word there... Thanks for your input!

Mangroves are great, but I prefer them in the display tank. With a little ingenuity and som zip ties, you create a nice clean cost line

I keep my mangroves away from cats for the sake of their health, as they develop slowly.

I occasionally find a partially decomposed leafs, and even found urchins sitting on them as well as chwing on the roots. If they were toxic I'd expect stuff to be dead. But you could just make it hard for cats to get too.
