I have a Purple Tang and a Powder Blue in QT and they have ICH. The Purple is covered, but seems okay and is eating everything and pretty fat. The Powder Blue has a few, but isn't eating anymore. I am using Copper Power, but haven't gotten to therapeutic levels yet.

I have two questions:

1. Should I keep slowly ramping up the Copper Power or speed up the process to get within therapeutic levels now that they are infected?

2. What can I do to prevent transferring ICH to my other tanks?

The QT with ICH is in a room by itself and at least 20 feet from the other tanks and I use seperate tools for each tank. I wash my hands whenever they are in any tank. Just wondering if you experts have any other tips to keeping it contained to the infected tank?

Thanks in advance.

The spots on the fish are the marks left "after" the parasites have dropped off, so they should be re-cycling for awhile. Total cycle can take 20-28 days. So quickly ramping up with more copper won't really help the fish as the copper kills the parasites during their "free swimming" stage. By that time, you should be at therapeutic levels. Small regular doses spread out throughout the day is usually much easier on the fish as you progress to therapeutic level.

I'm more concerned about the PB not eating.

Sounds like you are right on the money to stopping any spread of parasites from tank to tank. Wet tools or wet hands shared tank to tank is the most common error we make.

I would go ahead and continue to ramp the copper up to therapuetic level.

Do you have pics of the fish? When you say covered are you sure it's ich and not velvet?

Cross contamination, things I do:

Keep separate everything, including all nets, top off containers, food containers etc.

When feeding or doing maintenance always work on or feed your clean tanks first, then go to the infected tanks last.

I can't post a pic at the moment, but will post one later tonight. I am pretty sure it is ICH as I just dealt with Marine Velvet on my last QT and it looked like my fish was covered with powdered sugar. This is more like several specs of salt spread out over the body. Either way, the copper will kill it...

I am so glad I decided to QT everything.

Sorry about the horrible pictures, but this fish is moving around way too much to get any clearer right now...

It really doesn't look like ICH though from the pics. Are these flukes?

A 5 min FW will either confirm or deny flukes. Here is a write up on how to do it.

Freshwater dip done, but nothing fell off or it was too small to notice in the bucket. The fish is showing no signs of stress or anything, so I am going to continue with the copper. I should be at therapeutic levels by tonight. I will treat with PraziPro after the copper and hopefully all is well...

From the dusting I think I see on the PT I’m going to say Velvet.

This would be the second batch of fish that have had Marine Velvet. All of my previously infected fish made it through and and these guys seem to be doing very well. Everything I have read about Marine Velvet make it seem like a death sentence, so hopefully these guys make it through.

I am so grateful for everyone here at R2R!!! I have been reading this forum for a few years before I actually made the decision to get into saltwater. If it wasn't for this forum I probably would not have quarantined and would have already had two disasters in my DT and may have given up already. I am normally not a patient person and it went against my norm to get fish and have them sit in QT for over a month and have inverts and corals sit for over two months, but I decided to listen to you experts and am so glad I did.

Thanks again!

Just an update...

It's been 12 days since my fish have been at therapeutic levels of copper and they are showing no signs of velvet at all anymore. They are all swimming around looking healthy and eating everything I throw at them. My Powder Blue was not eating anything for a day or two and was getting very skinny in the beginning, but started eating seaweed and slowly nibbling on the Mysis shrimp and the flake food I feed the other fish. Today he is actually looking very healthy and will eat anything with the other fish. He is actually becoming the king of the QT and the Purple Tang does not try to bully him at all anymore.

Looks like I have most likely made it through another successful QT!!!
