BRS has it listed at old price but all out of stock, sign up to be notified I guess.

A-Z has it alas at new price. Limited supply and high demand drives up the price I guess.

Some guys have started using this...but you must separate the shells.

I bought some in August, and again last month. Seem to recall paying about the same. Product is a bit different (mostly smaller pieces) but appears to work just as well.

BRS had it in stock about 2 weeks ago. I purchased the 44lb bag. When I received it and opened the bag, the media was much smaller than what I was expecting. I've never used it before because it was always out of stock but it seems to be much smaller than the photos I have seen online.

For all of you that have used it before, does this seem to be the normal size? Honestly, I think this could be considered coarse sand. I placed a dime on top to get an understanding of the size of the media when taking the photo.

This is a quote directly from the BRS product page....

"Two Little Fishies pre-rinses their media in RODI water, as well as manually removing any snail or clam shells before packaging."

I have plenty of shells in my bag.

I was able to gather this amount of shells very quickly with very little effort.

Shells contain phosphate.
Dissolving them puts it back into the water.

I see this, or a variation thereof, said somewhat frequently. Do you have a study link? I have read that shells are approximately 95% calcium carbonate and 5% organic material .... which certainly would include some phosphates. But the same might be true for coral skeletons.

Either way, I removed any big shells I saw from the reborn, but did not go too crazy and my phosphate levels haven’t moved.

I did read a study somewhere. I will try to locate it.
My lfs still gets large 50lb bags of bones. They are very similar to the old reborn.
I will ask next week where they get it from.
You do have to pull out shells and rocks but its not bad.
I was their today and they had a few bags of it.
They sell it by the lb and use it in their carx systems.
I run my effluent over it but on my system its not really needed as my carx does not affect the ph of my tank.
The level of the bones has hardly moved in a years time.
I run Tunze manmade in my carx.
Here is a pic I just took of it with a dime for reference like the thread above.
I will post back Wednesday night when I find their source if they tell me, lol.
