For something that I understood to be crushed coral, I seem to have a lot of small shells and rocks.I emailed Two Little Fishies about the smaller size but never heard back.
I was able to gather this amount of shells very quickly with very little effort. This is a quote directly from the BRS product page....
"Two Little Fishies pre-rinses their media in RODI water, as well as manually removing any snail or clam shells before packaging."
I have plenty of shells in my bag.
Was your media much larger than the photo I posted? Not sure why but I bought two 44 pound boxes when i bought my reactor setup. Glad I did !!

Honestly, I'm not sure that it is. I just specifically read that they manually remove the shells but that is definitely not what I am seeing in my bag.Why are a few shells bad?
Shells contain phosphate.
Dissolving them puts it back into the water.
I did read a study somewhere. I will try to locate it.I see this, or a variation thereof, said somewhat frequently. Do you have a study link? I have read that shells are approximately 95% calcium carbonate and 5% organic material .... which certainly would include some phosphates. But the same might be true for coral skeletons.
Either way, I removed any big shells I saw from the reborn, but did not go too crazy and my phosphate levels haven’t moved.
