I'm helping my brother-in-law with a coral question. He's been in the hobby for years but his Emperor Angel fish kept him from keeping coral. His wife wanted coral, so they got a smaller tank for reefing - an 80 gallon that had a great amount of established mixed reef coral and some bubble tip anemones.

Overall, it's been doing great (and I got some sweet acros and hammers for helping.) He added a beautiful riterri anenome about a month ago. Things were going great until about two weeks ago. The red star polyps in the tanks have definitely taken a turn for the worse:

That's it on the back wall. It looks more like red star vertical puddle now. There are two other portions of it in the tank - they're not doing great but not as bad as the back wall.

Almost everything else in the tank is doing great - his hammer coral aren't as puffy but everything else looks great. Levels are good, no lighting change and it happening to three separate colonies so I don't think it's anything neighboring.

I have the same red star and hammers in my tank and they are doing well. Any ideas?

Thanks for the link Vintage. Ok, sometimes called starburst polyps, sometimes called daisy polyps, occasionally called red star polyps.

Any thoughts on what could be happening or are they two uncommon for anyone to know about?

The closed colony in pic 3 appear to have cyano and detritus mixed in. I also spot cyano on the sand. I would suggest using the ole turkey baster and blasting that lower colony to clean it off. The cyano is indicating an imbalance. Chemi clean is a quick fix. Flow is probably too low in some areas.

The wall mounted colony that’s a puddle, might have been smothered too long and wasting away.

Full parameters should be posted for more targeted advice

We did chemi clean on Saturday, so that's good to hear. I hadn't thought about detritus, thanks for the thoughts! I'll see if I can get full parameters.
