which kills more coral: rip cleaning with peroxide and substrate tap water sand rinsing or dosing things into a reef to save us from work? In this thread I just bumped on page one is a link to reefcentral and one to nano-reef.com peroxide logs.

rip cleaning does not have seven pages of losses documented at any time. its just more work than adding things into the water.

Entire rip clean start to finish in a dinos invaded pico. Tokash's deep clean from above is complete and updated a few weeks out. we didn't use peroxide much at all, wanted to feature its deep clean/100% tap water sandbed rinse and external rock rinse as updates.

Help! My 10g Waterbox has been up for about eight weeks. Tank inhabitants are a few snails, a tail spot blenny, and an ocellaris.

Nutrients are fine. Running a small refugium in the back chamber

I think this came in on a snail shell, but it literally exploded in a few days.

Im interested in squelching this early and not letting it get completely out of control. All the rock work is a single piece. What's the full procedure for the peroxide scrub? How does one rinse the sand bed? I don't want to do it wrong!

Some people will say it's just the ugly phase, but I'm 99% sure this came from a snail.

Thanks tons for posting I bet we can help.

study this 2x rip clean tanks it’s perfect roadmap. All steps listed then they run it with pics before during after
Read it. A few clarifying questions:
When you say new sand, do you mean a new bag of sand, or cleaning the sand already in the tank with tap water and then putting it back in?

Do I also pull everything, including the refugium out of the back chambers and clean it?

Do I need to replace my ceramic bioballs as well?

this whole process does make me anxious because of all the time spent cycling and all the assertions that your sand is a great bio filter...

TIA

:) but that means you have low standards for tank invasion how nice to intercept vs recover from a full invasion.

That’s perfect you will really like the after setup. It’s not particularly dirty now so you are indeed acting early, well done.

I’ll customize these steps for sure:

You can run lights as normal when cleaned. If we’re loaded in coral we would delay bright lights in the new clean condition. Above it will shine.

catch fish first he goes into a large tote of clean saltwater or actually clean drawn off tank water above. Only take the first third that drains, its clean.

set him in the holding tote of water

watch for jumps!!!!!

now the tank is snail and rock and sand and back area

fully clean all areas keep snail in holding bin w fish

take the live rock and swish it inside a smaller container of clean saltwater

see how live rock only gets saltwater and sand gets tap, that’s key.

the sand will take long long to be rinsed in a bucket in the tub or sink via fill with tap, hand mix, dump a hundred times. Thats GHA feed and cyano feed you are proactively removing.

when its 100% clean rinse it ten more times I’m not joking heh our tendency is to under do, that kills. Clouding kills, we remove it.
*Final rinse for sand is RO, see how that evacuates tap

assemble swish clean rocks on pure sand

half new water, check for clouding, add back old water and fish and snail and rinse off all filter media in back in tap water we don’t care about its bacteria
No peroxide?

Frankly, I think rinsing the sand is an overreaction. That will likely lead to another diatom bloom, imo.

This definitely looks like new tank algae/film to me. I would scrape the glass, clean the pump and add a dozen hermit crabs. Done.

She changed mind, keeping tank as is.
