hi all, looking to make the plunge into using my own ro machine to make water, I'm abit unsure as to what fitting will be needed, theres already a ball valve connected to my cold tap which I've tested and it works, I'm wondering if an ro unit I will buy (new) will come with the bits necessary to plumb straight in? any suggestions as to which unit to buy? I mainly use ebay and am in the uk , many thanks. pic enclosed of valve

First off, not familiar with UK plumbing....but with my American eyes that looks like a plastic straddle valve on PEX pipe....which should work just fine. The only caveat is whether or not you have enough pressure. All you need to hook it up is what appears to be a hose connection.....mine has the John Guest quick connect with it. Here's the picture from BRS.

Not sure if the UK used the same threads as the USA for hose connectors.

Also as redfish stated, the membrane needs a certain amount of water pressure to function properly. The Dow membrane that I think is the most popular states a water pressure of PSI. Not sure what unit of pressure you use in the UK.

it's a 3/4 inch connection which I'm guessing is standard for water units. I'm guessing the tenants before installed it for drinking water or some purpose.

A typical RODI unit uses 10" canister filters which are pretty generic. Quality differs. A Basic unit will be a 4 stage. A sediment filter (usually 1 micron), then carbon block (I believe usually 5 micron), then the RO membrane, then finally the DI stage. How long they last really depends on your city's water quality. Some units already have both a pressure gauge and TDS meter. BRS sells a basic 4 stage with both I think for $150. BRS probably isn't economical for you with international shipping. But I would think someone else in Europe makes one.

these two caught my eye. the one that stands upright would be a bit better for keeping stable under the sink. (the missus would kill me if it leaked)

Do you have an idea of your local water quality / source? Is it using chlorines or chloramines? The type and amount of carbon pre-filters you need will vary based on this, so a simple sediment+block may not be sufficient for all sources.

Does the local council have reports available?

Hi,

I’m from the UK also, I have a unit from osmotics. They have plenty of videos on YouTube explaining what you will need and how to install in various situations.
