The ReefMat arrived Saturday. I had to make the intake fit since I have 1” pipe. Pretty much no room in the section with the skimmer, but it’s in. I placed an order for 4 refills from a different supplier that had it in stock.
I turned off the skimmer today and will see if I even need it as I am now running a refugium which I didn’t before. Possibly run skimmerless. It’s a 90 gallon, not heavily stocked with a 40 gallon sump. Nothing special. Getting corals back to what they used to be. Went months without a water change or dosing, so I now have to kinda start over.

The tank is in wall. So it, along with the sump are in a storage room where it doesn’t need to look pretty, just functional.

I’ve been out of the hobby for about 10 years. Just getting back into it and reading up. There are now two people in this thread saying they’ve gone skimmer-less… Is that a normal thing now? Kinda shocked to read that

Honestly I could probably stop mine also. I go about a month or so before my cup fills enough to dump. The filter roller works so well the skimmer doesnt pull out much. I keep mine going for oxygenation.

Just get a smaller skimmer like a Simplicity DC 120, pump is on the inside, great C/S, small footprint.

I’m looking at adding a roller mat to my sump. I have a 90 gallon display with a 40 gallon sump. The return chamber is 12x18 with a water height of 12”. But I do have a Reef Octopus Elite 150int 6in skimmer in that section. Which leaves me with about 8”x12” of space to fit a roller mat. I have a plastic container I user floss in it as a filter currently. So I need something i can mount on the side or free standing.

What brands should I stay away from and what is recommended?

Reefmat or Clarisea.

I would of gotten a Reefmat if I didnt already have my Clarisea.

I’m not 100% sure if the red sea reefmat 500 would fit but I’d recommend that if it does, I find the app very easy to use and changing a roll is pretty easy once you’ve done it two or three times. Fleece rolls are about $15 I believe. I’ve even turned my skimmer off because the reefmat cleans so efficiently, it also makes the water crystal clear
How many gallons is your tank & sump, and how long does the roll last. Would you recommend going bigger to last longer?

I believe I’m around 120-130 gallons after displacement, a roll typically will last me 6 weeks, Red Sea recommends up to 130 gal system for the reefmat 500. I’d say I’m close to the point where the 1200 would be better but I’ll save that for the next build.

So from your advice I’m doing a new build 100g tank would you recommend I go with the 1200, this person is selling me a 500 for a sweet deal. Or should I wait n go bigger

I bought a Red Sea filter mat for my new Red Sea reefer g2 250. Is working well and I think a roll will last 10 weeks. Water very clear.
