Well, @rtparty , turns out I've been stalking, er, um, following your thread for a while now. I've never really had much to say which, in and of itself, is odd. However, those days have come to an end for two reasons. 1.) I am stoked you got the Spectra fixed as I was really bummed out, for you, that it looked like curtains. and 2.) I apprecited your comments in the "Biota" thread. I have not weighed in there yet and am not sure I will. It's all been kicked to death and there is not much to be added.

Thank you for following along! This tank definitely hasn’t gone to plan 😂

I’m feeling the tide turn though. Halides are fixed, dosing is all in order, cyano and dinos are gone (for now), the algae scrubber is starting to grow like crazy, but bubble algae is the new pest of the week. It has really taken off. I plan to scrape a ton out with a dental pick and suck it out with my next water change.

The Biota thread is a mess but been fun to watch

What was wrong with it?

The original owner had swapped the Giesemann ends for the S type plug that Sunlight Supply brought to market years ago. When they did that, they mixed up the two wires coming from the fixture that power the bulb. There is a third wire but that is ground.

The one wire connects to the center contact point and the other connects to the shell. Doesn’t work well when those are mixed up.

So when I shortened up the fixture cables I just wired it how the original owner had them.

@PaulErik deserves all the credit! He has helped me through the whole ordeal

Hi @rtparty ,

I’ve got a 440 as well. Struggling to stabilize the water flow to/from sump. Nothing major - just loads extra ATO water or runs low in the overflow causing suction sounds. Adjusting the ball valve is a PITA.

I saw you have a Hygger DC. I have the DC3500 running at 100%. Have you had any issues with the flow rate? I’m wondering if it’s a problem with the pump. Many suggest I change the ball valve to a gate valve but I’m not sure that’ll solve the problem.

Curious if you had any thoughts?

I’m right there with you. Constant adjustments needed every few days.

I thought the Hygger was the problem so I swapped to a Sicce 6.0 but the issue is still there. No amount of adjusting fixes it.

IMO it’s a horrible choice by NYOS and one of the major reasons I am planning to tear this tank down and go with a large AIO instead.

Hmmm. Ok thanks. Someone suggested I use a Red Sea kit to convert to a gate valve. Might the be option.

BRS sells metric to imperial adapters. Then you could run a Spears gate valve. I’ve thought about going this route if I keep the setup

Ball valves are for on/off function only. Gate valves for controlling flow. Trying to tune flow with a ball valve would be a nightmare.

It’s a pain to do for sure but now that I focused on stabilizing the water level at the pump chamber it’s much easier.

Good ball valves will allow fine control but not the cheap thing NYOS uses. I prefer gate valves but the last two from Spears have both leaked on me.

I have to adjust my pump speed every 3 days or so to counter the difference because trying to adjsut the ball valve is impossible. Just the smallest move screws everything up. I believe the tiny overflow also plays a part in the problem but I have no way to prove that. Any change in the tank level is huge in the overflow. So it either sucks air or sends water down the emergency drain.

I might order a metric to standard adpater and put a gate valve on this thing. I think I would rather sell it at this point and just run my 25g for a while. I have other hobbies I would rather dedicate time and money to at this point

2 leaking gates is definitely a run of bad luck. I will be using a few on my 405 gal build, hope I dont run into a leaky valve. *Knock on wood* I have never had tank plumbing leak on me after over 20 years.

Neither had I. One was a 1.5" valve and the other was a 1" valve that replaced the 1.5" on my 250. The 1.5" came in with a badly pinched seal that BRS warrantied and gave me the 1" since the 1.5" was on backorder for months. The 1" started leaking out of the dial/handle area after a year or so. It was slow but I kept a towel under it at all times

I had gate valves on my old system to control flow, but over time they froze in place from growths and deposits inside and could not be adjusted. lol

I read that NYOS switched to the current valve from gate valve for reliability and maintenance issues.

Finally got the Orca 6105 installed and I REALLY like it so far. I mean I can’t run it more than 10% when pointing at the glass but it reaches the other side extremely well at 30%. The wide flow attachment seems to be extremely wide. I am thinking of swapping the 6075 for another 6105.

Anyway…couple top down shots during the water change. I siphoned out a ton of bubble algae but have a long way to go with it

Anybody else get nervous every time you hang a new light up or is it just me???

IMG_2557.jpeg
I hung my canopy with the same the same way you hung your light fixture. Also where in Utah are you? I am down towards the south part of Utah County.

I am in Lehi.

I couldn't get the pipes to be level and had to scrap them. I went with heavy duty shelving brackets and some pre cut shelf from Home Depot. It was a quick fix but has done extremely well

Still looks good. I used heavy duty eye bolts. So I could lower a side to make them level above the tank. I had to lower 1 side by 1/4" to make it level across the hanging canopy. 1000015457.jpg

Which salt do you use on your tank/s?

Currently I’m using ESV and will stick with it for the foreseeable future
