To water-protect my plywood stand I first used KILZ, followed by RUST-OLEUM paint. I hit it heavy at the seams. Others may have their own secret sauce. ;)

I used Red Guard, after it dries paint it. It's used around showers when putting tile on the walls & floor. Dries rubbery like you siliconed the whole thing.

Sand using 80 to 200 grit sandpaper. I silicon all seams and joints.
Then prime with killz.
Sand again using 200 grit sandpaper
Then I roll on Rustoleum Topside. This stuff was made for boats.
Looks amazing like you did an epoxy coat.
 

Freshwater filter only or is it? Have you ever used an HOB filter on a saltwater tank?
