should there be a seperate microfauna forum?

I know I'm probably wierd. I love microfauna. I know there is the "hitchhiker" thread which technically covers microfauna. But I don't like that they are grouped in with inverts such as mantids, crabs, shrimp etc... I was thinking pods, worms, mites and so on should have there own. I was wondering if anyone else thinks this might be a good idea?

Like I said I know most are not Into it like me. I wanted to see how much interrest there is before boring everyone with my obsessions. Lol I know there are a few though.

I think it is a great idea, as I have noticed a lot of "I wasn't sure where to put this". Peeps don't automatically think of the category "Inverts" when their brains are on the "what is it!", so they miss it. I think I see as much ID threads around the other sections, as I do in the invert section. Hitchhiker ID is a big draw for people. It ties all the niches together, no matter what you keep it's a common denominator.

Smaller threads with better tags will show up in the outside searches more. The big long thread never shows up in Google when I'm looking for something. It's the smaller threads that appear.

There's arguably too many forums now, but more importantly people don't post stuff in the proper forums as it is - I'm always playing thread placement janitor.

I agree you don't want too many separate sections, however maybe there are some on here that aren't being used, that could bear being pruned.

But aside from that, I dislike that looooooong ID thread. When I look up and realize that's the thread I'm in, I don't have the same discussion as you can't wander off topic in those threads. By off topic I mean address another issue or discussion brought on by the ID. I feel like that's an "ID and run", thread.

We can agree on this. :)

Side benefit is it actually catches a lot of posts properly in the invert forum, which would otherwise end up burried/lost in reef discussion (yuck).

I just realized why people don't automatically put ID questions under invert..... it's because they need an ID and don't know what it is yet, so they are unsure of where to put it.

It dawned on me when someone read the below quote...

"I'm assuming this thread will go here since whatever it is has a shell and is more than likely an invertebrate..."

That's one of the reasons it shows up in more general sections. So now I would definitely go for an ID section, instead of lumping it in where it currently is.

Technically pods, worms, mites, and anything else that you can see withthe naked eye would be classified as Macrofauna, but I understand what you're thinking. As evolved said about too many forums and playing janitor, it coincides with people not knowing what they're looking at and also there seems to be some impatient people that feel the need to post the same thing in multiple forums looking for a quick answer. I know I'm fairly new here, but maybe we can pull all our resources and research together and make an identification guide that could possibly become a sticky? That way it's there for people if they're looking. Just a thought.

When I see people doing that, I merge those threads into one and put it in the proper place. It's completely unnecessary.
Plus, people perceive "reef discussion" to be the place to get the fastest answer.

Unfortunately, far too many people never look at stickies. Especially those impatient ones.

I thought micro fauna was misleading. Didnt know macro fauna was a thing. Lol thanks. I believe that one Id thread that ee have is kinda what your referring to. I don't think people enjoy researching. Rather than searching a data base they want a quick answer. Which is why they ask rather than searching google. I personally search first and only ask when I can't find it. I enjoy finding them and feel the name sticks better when you work for it. :) I think a macrofauna forum would be awesome. Its kinda my thing. Although I'm no expert. I also understand being over packed with forums. Hopefully there will be some that get pruned and room will open up.

I absolutely agree some do not care about a search feature at all.... that's why groups on Facebook have become so popular.
