I stir mine up weekly at water changes. Not sure (in a mature tank) why you want it all that clean. Critters and fish like some sediment in it.

Yours looks great compared to mine. Mine is full of old snail shells and hermit change outs, pieces of rock rubble and beach shells my kids threw in.

Nice tank! If you take out those shells it may look cleaner (if thats what you want).

At first I thought that octopus was real!

Reading this thread, it seems that most/all that have sand in the reef tank, do so for aesthetic reasons only. Does no one do the "deep" sand bed anymore? Perhaps I am showing my age but 4.5-6" of very fine sand, with a thin layer of coarser sand on top, to prevent it blowing around? Done correctly, one would never disturb it and enjoy all of the inherent benefits. To me, a "thin" sand bed, offers no denitrification benefits and is just a detritus trap.

My bed ia anywhere from 2-5"s especially when my Yellowhead Jawfish decides it needs more room, then it goes up to 6" where he's at. lol

Edit: To help keep it clean I have bought many Nassarius snails & 3 Fighting conch's that I never see unless I stir up an area of sand. Also have hermit craps & other snails.
