Just transferred a Atlantic Blue from my quarantine to my display 125...all of a sudden I start seeing white everywhere. It was hard to take a good photo for you guys but can anyone please help diagnose so I can treat. I’d hate to have my first tang keel over on me... I quarantined for 3 weeks and everything seemed fine. It was housed with a blue neon goby that might’ve been helping to keep the tang clean, I’m really not sure at this point.

That's what it looks like. What'd you do for QT?
I didn’t treat for anything, I just kept it separated for a month. I didn’t see anything I might need to treat for, it looked perfectly healthy until I switched tanks.

Yeah, that's the problem. Prophylactic treatment with Copper or Chloroquine for 2 weeks is really what is necessary combined with an additional 2 weeks of observation. Humble.fish has a really good website with QT protocols for both.

Bummer. Looks like ich. Unfortunately, 3 weeks observation probably isn't enough if you aren't treating.

Is it possible that ich was already in the display?

I will assume it looked fine when lights came on?? Cysts from Ich parasite drop off at night and go through their reproduction cycle and you may notice by mid day it will be covered aagin. if so- that verifies ich and treatment needs to be initiated.

You can't "wait it out" It's going to cause an exponential increase of parasite load in your tank with every cycle. You either have to take everything out and treat, or find another means to reduce parasite load like ozone or UV. He'll probably have 10x as many spots as he did last time in the next 4-5 days.

A daily check is fine, at like 3-4pm. They usually fall off during the night when the fish are sleeping to maximize re-infection. Don't worry, he'll get more spots shortly if your plan is to do nothing about it.

What you can do to treat your DT is use Reef Safe Medic by Polyp labs. I had an outbreak on my Hippo Tang and used Reef Medic for 20 days and no more Ich!!! It's good stuff and safe to use in your DT.

As the others have said; when Cryptocaryon first gets started, all of the parasites are more or less "in sync" and tend to drop off at the same time. As the disease progresses, they increase exponentially, and become out of sync and you'll see spots all of the time. In some instances, in tanks with very good conditions, the Cryptocaryon drops off all at once, and none of the tomites seem to make it back to the fish and the infection goes into remission. This is also the reason behind many reports of "reef safe" medications working. Don't count on that though! Observational quarantine is something I only use for specialty fish - flashlight fish, garden eels, etc. Here is an excerpt from my upcoming book on that topic:

“Observational quarantine” is a term you might hear. It involves a technique that is used when one wishes not to expose a new specimen to any procedure more drastic than environmental control and observation pending the development of any obvious disease symptoms. The use of this technique should be limited to extremely delicate fish, such as
flashlight fish, or fish that do not normally transfer diseases to bony fishes, such as sharks and rays.

The specimen is placed into an isolation tank and observed for signs of disease for a period of 45 days. The difference between this technique and no quarantine at all is that the problem of disease transfer is minimized on a case-by-case basis in choosing "low-risk" or "low-value" tankmates. In addition, the operative word observational is very important. At least twice daily, the animal must be inspected closely for signs of developing problems. Please do not fall into the habit of routinely using this technique simply because it is easier—because it is certainly not very effective.

Jay
