Awesome clams! How is it to have smaller clams? Do you feel they are more touchy or need any more care? My smallest is 3.5". I am thinking of getting one that is 1.75-2"

I am 3 and 3 for baby clams. My first three 2" and under maximas died, my last three are doing great. Making sure they have a stable environment to acclimate in is important from my experience. I don't let them flop around anymore.
The whole concept that baby clams need to be fed is a complete myth.

I knew they didn't feed. I have Anthony Calfo (sp) book on coral propagation and he says that the stuff they need is really to small to feed them. More of just a filter. He also said to not feed them directly.
Make sure and listen to skinz, he is pretty much our site expert on clams. I trust everything he says. He is the go to guy if ya have any questions or concerns!!!

I have been getting in and shipping aquacultured maximas in the 1"-2" range for several years now, I've never fed them a thing and they are rock solid at that stage in life, in fact the smaller the better for shipping right? would you rather ship a 1" chalice or a 6" colony in a bag? I think smaller stuff ships better but thats just my thought.

My LFS changed hands at the beginning of this year. Yesterday they got a lot of nice clams. There is one really cheap maxima that I am going to go and get later today. I remember reading something in this thread about maximas specifically. So I'd thought I'd ask for a little clarification.
Is there a way to stop them from moving, to prevent death? What would ideal placement be for a 1" maxima? I have an 8 bulb TEK light and plenty of random flow.

Scott if you can find someone kinda close to you the shipping costs will go down. Within a state or two. Where are you located? Maybe someone could ship one to you for cheap.
+ 1 with regards to movement. Smaller clams will stress badly if they are constantly moved or knocked over and that will ultimately lead to their death. As far as feeding. our tanks receive oyster feast, phyto and a multitude of other things. Clams will filter the water as well as reduce your nitrates. You should read either Fatheree's or Knopf's books on giant clams. They are one of the most fascinating and incredible creatures in the hobby.

A clam will move until it attaches and gets happy. They're amazing. Our clams are kept on top of the rocks under our T5's and on top of the rock and midway under a 400W 20K metal halide.

I favor the small clams: they ship better, cost less, are brighter colored, take up less space in tank and are fairly hardy. I have 7 maxima's and they were an inch or smaller when I acquired them. Keep your system stable and you should not have issues keeping them.
