Snapping/cracking sounds

I have been hearing cracking and snapping sounds coming from my aquarium. I think they are coming from the back where the
Equipment is located but I can’t tell for sure. Does anyone know what this may be?

Pistol shrimp are common hitchhikers.
That make a distinctive cracking or snapping sound.
Look them up. And congratulations.. sounds like you have some unintended good guy hitchhikers..

Are you sure? I started with dry
Rock but if it is pistol shrimp that would be great!

I was going to get a tiger pistol to pair with my watchmen goby, if there are any shrimp hitchhikers would they cause problems for the tiger?

Have you added anything else besides dry rock? Corals, mushrooms, anything else?
You'd be surprised what can hitchhike.

Probably not an issue depending on tank size..
You can get away with quite a bit in an 8' tank... Not so much in a 5 gallon nano..

A quick note from experience; baby mantis shrimp sound almost identical to pistol shrimp!

The sounds are every few seconds so I don’t think it is a shrimp

Sounds like a power head. If a snail sneaks in the cage part and gets close enough to an impeller, it will make that sound, or sometimes it’s just a sound they make here and there. I’ve only heard it come from my Jecod here and there.

If you put your ear to the glass, you will get an idea where it’s coming from. Otherwise sound and waves in the aquarium make it hard to trace.

Try feeling the return pump plumbing, see if the clicking gives any vibration feedback through that as a starting place!

What type of heater? Maybe it's the heater kicking on/off?
