So I’ve had a Wartskin angler for around half a year now, and I just recently found out that you can have eels in Hawaii, you just can’t buy them from a fish store as they are illegal to import or collect for commercial use. Snowflake eels are quite common in Hawaii, so a few trips to the tide pools should have good results.

Also, my Wartskin angler is around 4 inches long and is fully grown from what I can tell. Could I keep him with a snowflake eel? The tank he is in is 3 feet long, so not ideal but still good. I have a lid that is tight fitting to prevent escape. I’m just worried it would see sushi as food.

I’m hoping I can find an eel under a foot long.

What size is your tank? And I would get a full grown eel honestly. Under a foot long they are so thin that I do think an angler might try to eat it. Since anglers try to eat everything…

It’s 40 Gallons. A little under the 50 minimum. It is around 3 feet long with lots of caves and crevices

Then no eel, that is way way too small for any eel.

Even a golden dwarf?
Yeah. I always say bare bare minimum for the smaller eels is 75 gallons. And those havnt been in the hobby at all for the last few years, impossible to find with Hawaii being closed.

I live and Hawaii so I could just catch one myself. But why do they need such a big tank if they only get a foot?

Oh lol! And because eels like to swim a lot more than people give them credit for. My eels are always swimming around and exploring. They are very misunderstood in their space needs. I learned a lot from my 4 morays (in a 300 gallon tank) and they really do enjoy the space and moving around from cave to cave

Mine swimming around. I believe mine are so active because they have the space to do so and not stuck in one single cave. Obviously its your tank, but they have taught me a ton about morays and keeping them (a little over 2 years now!) and I share my experience because they are such amazing creatures

Gotcha. I’m 80% getting a 200 Gallon tank next year, if I get lucky I might catch a dragon moray 👀

Oh I so wish I could just go catch one! Especially a dragon. I have a dragon eel technically (the jeweled) since he is in the same family. You can kinda see it in his face! I do love him he is my first eel I got him as a baby! But the Japanese Dragons… dream eel for sure!

This is my jeweled

One thing I would add is plan on a well fitted top covering. Place weights, simple bags of sand on cover. Eels are curious, quite strong, and known escape artist
