I am not super picky about fish. I mainly want to have a happy healthy setup. However the splendid dottyback has stood out to me for some reason. I understand the challenges around keeping this fish which is why I figured I could do a tank specifically for one. My only issue is it seems to be a lot of time and money to set up a tank for one fish. Granted I could have a lot of fun with corals to keep it interesting. Is there any fish that might exist with a splendid dottyback?

Since Dottybacks can be jerks, you want fish that can take it. Foxface, some of the larger wrasses species, tanks, etc. Damsels and Clownfish can be other options as well.

Okay good to know. I know one day we want to do a large tank with triggers, tangs, maroon clowns, and other large dominant fish. Would they be ok in a tank like that?

Likely. Anytime you have a bully, the best way to calm them down is have them with other fish that are as active as they are. Bullies rarely pick on fish bigger than them, especially if they're capable of defending themselves.
