Hello,

One point of contention is that tangs don’t “school”. They shoal. I don’t mean to split hairs, but it’s important to understand the difference.

Fish that school often “need” or feel most comfortable together. Shoaling can begin and end and is more what you see in tangs.

They often stick together to feed but if they could feed in each others absence they may even prefer that. Anyway, enough splitting hairs!

If you have enough “real estate” - this may work. Purple are more aggressive as zebrasoma go but with several I’m sure you’d be fine. In fact, even powder blues get along with one another in numbers great enough! I’ve had 6-7 together for a time but disease took it all but 2. 2 didn’t work. But I’ve seen this in large aquaria many times and I consider PBT particularly surly.

The small size is likely to make them less of a threat and less of a target to the incumbent tangs. However - it sounds like the sailfin is the true tank boss. He doesn’t allow aggression because he is top dog (I hope that never changes or you’ll end up with a likely “mad king” situation if you get the reference).

However, your sail is a zebrasoma tang as well so it’s possible he would not approve of this idea but I’m guessing numbers are your friend in this instance.

However - being so small, it also makes the new purples more susceptible to death by aggression as they will be quite fragile. As ruthless as it sounds - if you want 7, I’d buy 10. Law of averages and things happen. 2-3 isn’t likely to work so you’ll want to ensure you have room for loss.

My typical disclaimer though is that individual fish have individual temperaments and nothing is ever guaranteed - I try to operate (based on experience) on suggested probabilities!

If you do accomplish this, you must post videos! :)

I appreciate your response, yeah I was thinking 9 to end up with 7 but can buy 10. My worry is indeed that the sailfin will pick the weakest and destroy one at a time. I am hoping 2 mirrors along with extra large PVCs that change the landscaping to keep him occupied might allow the purples to settle in.

I'd be pretty ticked if this many would die in my tank; the financial loss being secondary.

BTW. I have 6 cherub (argi) angels in the tank and the way they behave is pretty hilarious; I love it. They look like SWAT team clearing each room on the way from one side of the tank to the other.

I had several flame angels in my 500g for a while - it was quite neat as well!

Unless you have an issue with disease I’d be surprised if you lose a lot - depending on size!

I know I’m a little late to the thread but in case the info helps you or someone else down the road when it comes to zebrasoma tangs it is best to have atleast 3 to reduce aggression and a purple is more aggressive than the yellow typically it is advised the yellow be larger than the purple by a good bit for example my yellow was 3” and my purple maybe 1.5” I also added a yellow eye Kole tang (I would highly recommend one in your tank if you still want a bristle tooth) I also plan to add a gem tang while it is still a zebrasoma for some reason they tend to be left alone when it comes to other tangs even my lfs had their personal tank with a lot of tangs and they had a powder blue kill just devout everything with exception of the gem not sure why maybe because of how different it looks

So, what are the chances of a PBT being nice to everyone as the sole tang and bigger fish of a 250 gallon tank? Only other tang I like is the yellow, but they are way overpriced here in spain and I doubt they can keep a PBT in check.

I have been thinking about adding an angel emperor so the PBT isn't the boss of the tank, but it will be a 6x3x2 feet, maybe isn't enough for an emperor.

Dont let them fool you. They are down right nasty and may be on their best behavior in your presence BUT.. as soon as you leave, the devil horns emerge

Ive gone through 4 PBT with high hopes. They leave copperband alone , but most others are harassed whether through feeding or just pure annoyance

But wrasses, anthias, damsels, gobies and blennies are harassed too? Or just angels/tangs/bigger fish?

Beside the copperband I'll only have small fish.

My bigger fish, mainly tangs. I have 27 of them. Leaves harlequin tusk, clown trigger and smaller guys alone

Mine is nasty to other herbivores all the time. And will harass, often to the death, any and all new fish added to the tank. I have found that the mirror trick goes a long way to helping with the latter issue though.

I only have a Tailspot blenny as a herbivore, so it should be ok.

Do you recommend Clown Tangs?
I have a 10" one. Previous two were very nasty (temper) and right up there with the PBT and Sohal.
My current is 10" but got it large

Wow! It’s beautiful.

In your experience, what is the nastiest, most aggressive fish you’ve ever kept/seen in the reef business?

You don't think you'll ever be adding any new fish after the PBT?

I'll add it last, but If I need to add anything after, I can use the mirror trick, or take it to the sump for a couple months, add all the fish and get it back in after that.

Ok. Good luck! It's a beautiful fish, but I expect it will give you many problems, as mine has with me. And catching it to move it to the sump may be easier said than done.

Wanted a PBT since forever, and finally I have a big enough tank for one (200 gallon).

I have been reading the thread. So one question, can I have the PBT as the only tang, or do I need multiple bigger tangs to curb the aggression? What tangs are good to stop it from being aggressive?

Having a well-established tank can make adding fish quite challenging. We had some acrylic available and decided to build a divider. After a few years of use, we are happy to say that it has been a complete game changer. We added multiple fish, including tangs, and experienced zero casualties due to fish aggression. The divider also provides safety for new additions, and feeding them has become a breeze.
