i work in the insurance industry directly for a major company, and have experience in sales, claims and underwriting, and in several different lines of insurance. most people who pay for insurance have no idea how it works or if they have the right coverages and options. i figured a thread where insurance professionals give out unofficial advice could be of use. remember to always verify information directly with your insurance company/agent.

Am I correct in understanding that, while my equipment is covered from many things, none of my livestock would be?

Thanks for posting this!

I haven’t said anything to my insurance about a tank. I have 200+ gallons of running saltwater. Should I tell them or does it not matter? If I tell them will my rate go up?

What is the easiest method for covering damage to my aquarium, equipment, and home in the case of a catastrophic tank failure?

certain lines of insurance are pretty even with various companies - auto, mc, bt, etc. homeowner’s is a bit trickier especially when dealing with things like fish tanks.

my best advice would be to call your insurance company or agent and discuss your options. some companies will add on riders for stuff like this, but some won’t.

Here's a question regarding Flood Insurance. Can you get coverage to just pay for partial flood damage?

I asked my new agent about Flood Insurance and she says policies cover the whole house, basically total loss and/or belonging (if you add that as well). This is what I used to pay. It was up to $2000/yr for flood with coverage for some belongings on a $110,000 home.

It doesn't look like you can have less coverage for flooding say if you just had the basement flood, but the whole house is still intact. It's either all or nothing.

flood is one peril generally not covered by home insurance, unless you add it. and it’s not always offered, depends on the area you live in. when you do have flood coverage you need to make sure you understand what type of flood you’re covered under. some policies will cover the dwelling itself and some will also cover your personally property. i don’t know of any that will only covered a certain portion of a dwelling.

check on these common causes to see if you’d be covered: natural distaster, sewer back up/plumbing, unnatural accidents like fish tanks.
