The WEIRDEST thing, EUPHYLLIAS

The weirdest thing ever has been going on in my tank. It started yesterday before I went to work. My Frogspawn and Orange hammer corals were not their usual fluffy fat selves. Came home from work and no change.
This morning still the same thing. Both closed up tighter than I have ever seen them. EVER.
Even more odd is the fact that they are on opposite sides of the tank from each other with another Orange Torch in between. The torch is not effected at all?????
I keep a very mixed reef with sticks, clams, anemones, z's and p's, acans etc. No other single coral is showing any signs of any stress at all. PERIOD! Everything with exception of the Euphyllias are happy and fully open.

Know I know what everyone is going to say........can't help with out params and lighting etc.
Well params as always are rock solid, tested last night and everything is right where I want it to be. Although calcium is a touch high at 480.
Lighting is 8 months old, T5's. Changing them out next month. Skimmer is rocking. And no nothing has been changed or done to the tank in 4+ weeks. Other than weekly 10 gallon water changes and regular feedings.
And then the only change was I went to ESV salt on both tanks.

Any ideas?

Rob, can the torch reach out and touch the hammer or frogspawn? IME they're the most aggressive Euphyllia species and go after the others if around, of course, I would also expect other less aggressive corals in the torches path to have some issues too...

Did you notcie anything shortly after changing to ESV? I highly doubt that's it, but they might be showing a stress reaction to that.

Nippers could potentially be another possibility, keep all your tank lights on and all ambient room light off, sit back and observe for a not so friendly tank inhabitant.

No the three euphys can not touch each other at all. And there are no other corals that could touch them.

Only think I noticed when switching to ESV is in water clarity and improvement in coral color. Also less need for daily dosing of Alk and Calc.

I did look at the tank with a red LED last night 2 hours after lights out, and plan to do the same tonight.

No leathers in this tank. Day nasty looking!:xd: I do have a Tyree Toad in the grow out but thats another unaffected system.

Any brown jelly forming? Might be a good idea to take them both out for a dip in TMPCC or whatever you use.

No brown jelly or white strings. Very odd to me. Closed up tighter than hell for two days now???????

Could it be that the clearer water has allowed more light into the tank and it is a lighting issue in the snese that they are getting to much light now that the water is clearer? I switched as well and have noticed that the water is clearer as well.....But I did it in 5g increments as not to throw anything off.....I have noticed my orange hammer is opening bigger now and all corals are fatter with the new salt.....

I keep all my Euphyllia right together I have orange,pink,blue,green of almost all/ torch, frogspawns, hammers and they all do the tentical rub down with no ill efects:neutral:

Ave you tested your iodide/iodine if it is to high or to low I've seen this in my tank.... I've also heard they'll do it when getting ready to split heads, mine did this for a week B4 and then opened up again for no reason I could figure out then one night came home from work presto open! I've also found seaspiders on some of my older indo frogspawn/hammers they are very hard to see because they'll sink into the flesh like a wood tick but if you find one tweezers will work to remove it! Hope all comes around and perks up !!!

Funny you mentioned that. I did notice that one branch of the spawn did look like it was gonna split......into fours!!
Other than that, there is nothing else going on. hammer is not splitting.
I have not tested for iodine, but might give that a whirl.

If the two affected are the ones at the tank walls how is your flow directed in your tank? Tank walls tend to be the end of the road for anything in your tank to flow against. You may have had something in the water column that was directed towards the sides of your tank that would not affect anything in the middle because it has less contact time (and exposure) to flow patterns.

Sure no worries - it's not a rule by any means that they can't be kept together, some can and some can't.

I have a 60 cube tank with flow coming from upper left wall by means of a mp20, return pump is QO4000 coming out of the built in overflow and bottom right corner is a Korilla Nano.

Mine done that a month or so ago and I thought for sure I was going to lose it but slowly but surely it started opening backup and now looks great. IDK what was the cause was tho

Not usre I would pull them or dip them at this point since you don't know what the issue is it might cause more stress....Got any pics Rob? That might help.......


also I know you said the Parameters are inline but give us what they are anyway.....Any soft corals in the tank that could be sending out chemicals to fight for space? Some times they can be 5" ,10" away and still fight for space. We may think that they are far enough away but it really is there choice if it is or not......

Here we go first is the Frogspawn, Second is the Torch, Third is the Hammer. Last FTS. Kinda surprised with the photos from the iPhone, but these are no Bella Pix!

So what is this day four? New skeletal growth is normally bright white and slimy. Today it looks like it is turning grey like the rest of the coral structure, and doesn't have the same appearance.
