Hi all, I’m quite new here and currently working on building my first reef tank (an Nyos Opus G2 300). I don’t even have an aquascape or water in there yet but I’m sort of planning ahead what fish I would like to keep.

I would love to have some wrasse in there, and looking at what my local store has available, my first pick would be Cirrhilabrus ryukyuensis.

My question: how much of them should/can I get? I’m leaning towards 1 male 2 females to encourage the “flashing” behavior. Does that make sense or should I go with a pair? Three of them might be a bit much in a smaller tank (~70 gallon display)?

You should get a variety of species. The same will just cause fighting, different species is what usually encourages flashing without murdering

Thanks for the help, I did some reading on here and now realize this was a pretty dumb question.

I might want to go with some flashers in that case. Still, there’s the issue of the relatively modest tank size (90x55x53cm). Do you think a trio is feasible in there? Or should I stick to a duo or even a single one? Looking at what is available locally and not too similar looking maybe a combination of carpenteri+cyaneus+flavianalis could work?

I took a better look at the chart you sent and it’s been super helpful, thank you!

Sorry for asking more questions, but do these pairs look okay to you given the tank constraints:

P. flavianalis + C. exquisitus
or
P. filamentosus + C. exquisitus

If they are both okay, is there a preferable pair?

Thanks again for your help!

Yeah, that should work. All the flashers are similar in size except… that rare Madagascar one I can’t think of right now. Anyway, any combo like that should work though I’d add the flasher first

Thanks! And one last question: is flasher first preferred over QT + tank introduction at the same time?

Which ones of the fairy wrasses you think are the best looking ones? What is the consensus top 5?

I have these but want to see if there are others that look nice (no sand bed)

Mckosckers flasher
Pintail
Lubock’s
Solarensis
Naoko

My LFS has a couple of Decolores Pencil wrasse in. I am considering it, but wanted some opinions first.

He says they have been there for 2 weeks, and I saw them both eat today.

I currently have 1 Beaus fairy wrassse, I pintail fairy, 1 canary top wrasse, purple tang, Tomini tang, and starry blenny, in my 130gallon 5ft tank.

Any thoughts or experience with these? Really cool looking fish.

That looks like a Pseudojuloides severnsi "royal" pencil wrasse. @i cant think ??

They say pencils are super sensitive, but I found my P. splendens as robust as any Halichoeres, which is to say a complete pig.

Mine did seem more flighty than the other wrasses though and frequently tried jumping, so I would for sure have a good lid.

I don't see anything incompatible in your fish list, but as per usual, I would start with an acclimation box.

Thanks for the reply. I’m going to dig in this evening and do some reading up.

How do they do in quarantine? Any special needs there?

I did see them both eat, certainly promising.

I have a med/large pintail I pulled from one of my displays. He’s generally a good to great citizen.

Can I place him in a 125 that had the rockwork reset in the last week if that tank also contains a well-established 2.5” mystery wrasse?

There’s also a pair of shepards angels, comet, purple, fowleri and hybrid Achilles tangs, pair of clowns… it’s an active tank with gyres, good rock coverage.

IMO that would be a brutal situation for a pintail, one of the more wimpy wrasses. A 125 is not large at all for a mystery wrasse to “forget” who else is in the tank. My mystery started to get super aggressive towards my flame angel, jordani and rhomboid so it had to be rehomed.

Hello all, I'm adding my last fish, and thinking about adding a peppermint hog fish, a flasher wrasse or a leopard wrasse as my last fish , I currently have a melanurus wrasse (kinda like him, he's so fast he makes the other fish uncomfortable) but really only cares about himself, a red head solon fair wrasse (love it, very chill, really feels at home in the tank) , a cleaner wrasse (might be my favorite) , assorted chromis, damsel, gobies clowns, mandarins, varying amounts of Molly's and a tomini tang (who might take exception at first to the flasher if it's boisterous). What would be my best decision , I love a chill tank and all of my fish have their own areas and get along very well, and I don't wanna ruin the vibe. I'm also open to any other suggestions.
