The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

Thank you!
No problem! My lineatus is still a younger female, but man I can’t wait for her to transition fully.

Based on price no
But I don’t remember the difference
The main difference seems to be how dark they are… Also, I think “Indian Ocean” is possibly meant to be Indonesian/Indo-Pacific but I’m not too sure.

Those two tusks are at different life stages right? Top is a male, bottom a juvenile, early female I'd guess

My wrasse DT is overrun by aiptasia and I am(was) planning to order 25+ berghia and add at night. However, I just witnessed something disturbing today the vivien has started to join the babi in hunting snails. They swim as a pair and try to topple astraea snails. Not sure what to now. @JoJosReef did you get your CBB from Dr. Reef?

I did. I got my first CBB from a local that I probably killed and then the current one is from Dr. Reef. It eats well but I have to target feed it. I believe it is wittling away at the Aiptasia, but I have only witnessed it 3 times.

This is good to hear. I have picked up two from my lfs. The problem is the 30 day qt or 8+weeks observstion in a smaller tank. They just don’t make it through. I want to be able to add a thick, eating, QT’d one straight to the DT.

Mine wasn't thick, but it was eating mysis from Dr Reef. I kept feeding mysis and introduced it to live white worms and then freeze dried black worms--also a bunch of other stuff it had no interest in. I can't speak for Dr Reef CBBs, but if they make it through QT woth him, I assume they are eating something

It’s been a while since I’ve shown off any new wrasses so, here’s some I’ve had but kept somewhat quiet about other than when I got them :)

And my Chiseltooth Wrasse Juvenile - I cannot get a better photo than this as it’s just too black.

And obviously some older guys that you’ve all seen a lot…

Hey all, I have a question on Leopard wrasse in QT. Got a great specimen in the mail but it did not find my Tupperware sand bed and has instead wedged in between a pipe and glass bottom. Should I intervene or just wait it out. It’s been a little over 24 hours since introduction.

So after my hawkfish (which is now gone) killed my Ruby Longfin. I knew I wanted to get another to replace him… which I did 😎

I also picked up a RedTail Flasher wrasse, but it did not do very well during shipping. Initially it appeared dead in the bag as it did not react or move and was laying on the bottom. I observed him for a bit and noticed he was breathing at a normal pace so decided to give him a chance. In the acclimation box, he is still mainly laying around, but did decid to eat a bit of frozen mysis which is a good sign. He could be “playing dead” as a defense mechanism from the stress of shipping.

Another update. My Lineatus has developed an injury just above his gill near his head. This injury appeared very faint in the acclimation box which I chocked up to him running into the side causing an abrasion injury. The injury became worse after release into the DT. I still think it looks to be an abrasion type injury, which he has made worse by running into rock work etc when hiding. It has been 3 days since his injury became worse and it has not progressed any further. He is eating very vigorously and starting to become more brave and stay out for longer stretches.

If I notice the injury worsening then I plan on removing him and placing him in a hospital tank with some Seachem Neoplex. As of now though, this injury does not appear to be causing any systemic ill effects.

In total now, I have the following wrasse in my system:

  1. Yellow wrasse
  2. Pintail Fairy wrasse
  3. Lineatus Fairy wrasse
  4. Eightline Flasher wrasse
  5. Ruby Longfin Fairy wrasse
  6. Blue Flasher wrasse
  7. RedTail Flasher wrasse
I plan on adding a Rhomboid Fairy wrasse as well which I was hoping to add with the RedTail and Ruby to help spread the aggression. Unfortunately the wholesaler did not have one in stock this past weekend. Their inventory showed one available, but once my LFS received their invoice; there was a message stating their inventory was wrong and the Rhomboid was removed from the order.

The only wrasse on wrasse aggression I’ve observed thus far is the Pintail chasing the Lineatus around. I am hopeful this is just temporary as they establish their hierarchy.
