The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

Bruce's suggestion of putting a mirror on one end is a good one. Are there other wrasses in the tank besides the melanurus and the flasher? Oftentimes more wrasses diffuse aggression.

In most cases that sort of aggression subsides, but not always. If it doesn't get better within a few days then one will need to be rehomed.

Just a cleaner wrasse. I tried the mirror. Melanarus showed no interest. So when I got home I fed the tank to see if the flasher would come out. He did, but only for a few seconds before the melanarus chased him around the tank back into a hole.

So I just quickly caught the melanarus and he's in the sump. I'll give the flasher a few days to settle and then add the melanarus. If it's still aggressive I'll rehome it.

I'm quite tempted to go and get a McCoskers and add it so when the melanarus goes back into the display there will be two flashers.

Was wondering if a Cirrhilabrus isosceles and a Cirrhilabrus rubeus get along.

In most cases, yes. Just utilize a social acclimation box when introducing a new wrasse to an established one.
.

I was thinking of adding them at the same time, so they would be in a 29 gallon quarantine tank together.

I'm busy reading this thread from page one for ideas for my new tank, figured I'd post a picture as well. This was my Halichoeres Claudia, which I ended up rehoming when it outgrew my tank. It was an awesome fish, but a stone cold shrimp killer when it was big.

Hey all! I need a suggestion on which wrasse to get for a 66 gallon (32" x 24" x 20") tank I'm planning. I know I want a McCoskers, but I was trying to decide between a blue flasher and linespot flasher to go along with him. I want something that is going to be bright colored, active, peaceful, and not too similar in color to the McCoskers. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Cirrhilabrus aurantidorsalis
Cirrhilabrus solorensis

Probably, unless your tank is big.

I'm not even close to knowing the minimal about fish/wrasse but I know you can't put 2 of the same type in a tank unless it is large.

Do you prefer a crescent or flat tail? :) That's the biggest difference between the two species.
Cirrhilabrus aurantidorsalis
Cirrhilabrus solorensis
The tank size isn't really suitable for either species I'm afraid.
Will 2 males of these species fight?
As these two particular species are in the same complex, the chances are quite high unless the tank is very large.

Bummer. [emoji45]

So I know this isn't the correct thread for this inquiry but; I am having trouble with nitrates (16-32ppm) in my 120 with 30gal sump (~130 gal water) and I am wondering if I am over stocked. I mostly have wrasse and little to no aggression,

3 Bipart leopards (1 male 2 females)
1 Potters leopard
1 ornate leopard
1 melagris leopard
1 large ruby head fairy
1 large lineatus
1 small flame wrasse
2 rhomboids (1 large 1 med)
2 pintails (1 large 1 med)
1 brunneus
1 katherine
1 yellow canary wrasse
1 mandarin
2 clown (med to small)
1 med to small yellow tang
1 med to small potters angel

total = 21 fish, seems high but despite carbon dosing, and a fuge that wont grow I have cyano issues along with stn on my SPS, now if you would pair down, which fish to sell off?

@Jstn
I would sell one rhomboid and one pintail...fairy wrasses don't form pairs like other fish. You are more likely to eventually have two males, and then one.

Also, you might have issues with the pintail and brunneus at some point...as they are in the same complex and don't always get along.

Are there any wrasse I can keep in a 60g cube? 24x24x24? Hopefully something with a crescent tail or pintail?

What are your P04 and are you using gfo or another phosphate remover in addition to carbon dosing? NO3 and PO4 are used by bacteria in tandem. Zeroing out 1 stops the process for the other. If not using any additional phosphate remover, then add some additional nitrate absorbing media in the sump, such as pond matrix.

Also, more frequent water changes will help. Though, if it weren't for the sps, your NO3 levels don't concern me.

Regardless of chemistry, I would suggest removing these fish.

That footprint is a bit on the small side for fairy wrasses. Maybe P. filamentosus, P. angulatus, or P. cyaneus.

Thanks. What would be some acceptable wrasse for that footprint?

Agree - those flashers would be better options.

(he just gave you 3 suggestions :))

I meant other than those 3, Like just a general list to look into? Maybe something better suited to a tank that size

Do those ceramic bowls/plastic containers with sand work for sand burrowing wrasses? Anyone here get any use out of one?

I know I guy that got a yellow canary wrasse not knowing they burrow when frightened and for sleeping and he had a barebottom, the fish dove into the glasss bottom and it broke it's back in two places. It swam around for a few more weeks before he euthanised it. It had two grotesque crooks in its back.

Containers of sand work. The wrasses seem to find them.
