Clue me in. I gave up guessing what pns is.
It's a brand. Like Becky said it's basically bottled bacteria. They have a few different varieties. There's one called Substrate Sauce that I've used in the past with good results.

I will keep those in mind.

PNS Probio is becoming very popular. It was originally cultured by Hydrospace for the aquarium trade. I think, if I remember correctly that the PNS stands for Purple Non-Sulfur. The stuff is smelly, really smelly, because of the support media--not the bacteria. The thing with those strains of bacteria that differentiate them from say Microbactor is that they can be aerobic or anaerobic and they are also consumed by some corals. At least two other companies have recently released their own cultures I think Brightwell is one of them. The Deep Cycle looks interesting to me as well and the Substrate Sauce that @tbrown mentioned seems to be their answer to start up bacteria. They also have a 'snow' product, I think it is called Yellow Sno or something like that.

Yeah. I liked Substrate Sauce. I feel like it kept my nitrates from really going off the charts in the 125. It may have been why my phosphates never went up either.

Hydrospace seems to be one of the real-science companies out there serving the aquarium trade. I wonder how their Substrate Sauce would work in an establish system. I increased the sand bed depth about 1/2" a month or so ago to better support the Yellow Wrasse, Conches, and Nassarius Snails and I'm getting a bit of a film algae bloom on the sand bed. Not too bad but unsightly. I was thinking I might need a bit more of a bacterial population in the bed. I liked their PNS Probio and will use it again and I may try the Deep Cycle as it looks pretty interesting. In short, I don't think they are a 'magic elixir' company.

I wonder if gonis would use that as a food source
I've mainly heard of SPS and non-photosynthetics actively feeding on bacteria but I would guess that all coral feed on bacteria to some extent. It certainly would not hurt. I'm not great with gonis but mine love Benepets and Reef Roids. I avoid Reef Roids for the most part though because it seems to bump up my PO4.

During my dino out break, my green goniopora massively grew. Pink goni, unchanged in growth rate.

After my dinos died off, my green goniopora is now withering away. My pink, unchanged.

So, I just assume, different species, different food needs. I am debating on trying.

I would, it is the one bacterial product I've used that I was convinced made a difference in my tank's health. If I were wealthier, I would dose it regularly.
