Hi all, my tank is five months old. I have three fish and recently added a few coral frags. I've had this Toadstool Leather for about five weeks. Except for the first couple of weeks while it was adjusting to the new home, it has looked pretty healthy. Today I noticed it is separating from the rock it was attached to when I got it. It looks great, but is there a problem, is this common, can I reattach it elsewhere, is this a long process? Here are my parameters:

salinity 1.025
temp. 78
pH 8.2
Nitrate 8.7
Phosphate .08
Alk 6.7
Calc 400

Any help appreciated. Thanks

I started with 1 and have so many now. You'll notice that pieces will look like it's ripping off, it's just dropping "babies". I can't see your video that you attached, but yes if you move and re-attach it will take a little bit but will grab. what I've done when fragging them is rubber band it to a small piece of rubble that I can then place within the other rock work. hope this helps!

Thanks, one question, so will a new one be growing where this one is currently?

Got it! I’ve had some flop over like that. When they tear they do re-grow generally! its kind of high on the rock work so might take some time for it to get used to the flow.

totally up to you, if its still somewhat attached, yes yo can move it. or cut the base. but there's days sometimes a week at a time where my polyps don't even come out, they're finicky but super hearty. If it falls, just know its going to attach where it lands lol

Mine did something similar recently. It fell over for a while then perked back up an looked fine. I figured it was normal pouty behaviour like leathers do but looking last night I see what looks like a baby. At least the polyps look the same. I've never had them drop babies before. They always just separated, but This is my first with the longer polyps and it's supposed to be a yellow if some type.

Update:

so about a week and a half ago I started this thread. Since then, my toadstool separated itself completely from the rock it was attached to. I replanted it in a new location. Almost immediately, it began to open up and extend. It has never looked better.

Can you tell us a bit more about the changes that caused it to recover? For example, does it get more or less flow now? More or less light? Do you know how much PAR it sits under? I've not had much luck with Toadstools.

Glad to see it is doing better!

sure thing. I'm not sure why it was stressed to begin with. It was initially low in the tank and in a low to moderate flow. It looked great for a few days before it started to bend over. After a couple of weeks I moved it to mid tank but there was no change. When I noticed it was separating from the rock it was attached to, it wasn't long before it completely broke off. I relocated it about six inches away, still mid tank, but partially protected by an overhang. I would say it is slightly less flow and because of the overhang, a bit less light intensity. I do not have a PAR meter so I can't answer that question.

In my limited experience, I have relocated corals after a couple of weeks if they don't look happy. This usually requires moving to more/less light or more/less flow. It's just hit or miss with me as I'm certainly no expert. Hope this helps.
