Too much polyps extension on SPS

Too much PE can indeed be an indicator of a problem. Remember that PE is mostly for gas exchange. Lower flow and poisons in the water can have PE more than it needs to be. It could also mean nothing.

The reason that the PE was out so much with the power out was because they needed to breathe - this was not a good thing.

If you do not want the PE out so much, get some dwarf angelfish.

I don't think it's PH or flow. I have some piece that are getting blasted and it still have good extension. My PH is at 8.3.

I don’t believe PE is only for gas exchange or a sign of a hungry coral. I have great PE and I don’t believe my corals are doing it because they need more food. I use PE as a sign of a healthy coral. Sometimes you get stressed out coral and are not looking very good overall but once the coral starts to recover is when you see polyps come out.

A lot of truth to this. As of late, my corals will retract polyps and then die a month later. This is in spite of “perfect” water parameters.

can you give some references? Which is more likely - the it 'means nothing' - as you say it can - or that its something bad.

There is nothing wrong with asking about excessive PE. Common thought is that PE is a good sign. Asking questions with continuous observation is good skeptical reef keeping skills. IMO keep us posted on how it's going. And, if anything changes.

There is such thing as hyper polyp extension. Normally associated with not enough light or wrong spectrum

Low oxygen, high nitrogen can also cause too much bad PE.

Veron talked about this in one of his books. The corals do not NEED to eat and seldom do in the shallow, clean reefs of the south pacific (he is talking about acropora). I think that he called it respiration, but that is not technically correct (I guess) and gas exchange is more like it. He also talked about how corals that could double their mass in several months would rarely risk extending their polyps if they did not have to - yes, it is a risk.

All of that said, it is usually a good sign... but be smart, understand what is happening and keep your eyes peeled for the other signs of unhappiness. Generally speaking, if a hairy acro has no PE all of a sudden, then you need to notice... same thing with one that never had much PE that all of a sudden has a lot.

My apologies if I mentioned this already, but I compare PE to full mantle extension in clams. This can oft be a sign of too little light, but people generally think that this is a good think since they are "out all of the way." Healthy clams do not often need to be fully extended to get enough energy from zoox under good lighting. Either PE or full mantle extension can be a good or bad sign.

Have anyone have any experience with too much PE? All my SPS have way too much PE. My Tubs Stellata and Forest Fire all you can see is polyps. My Bubble Gum Millie have a fuzzy brown appearance to it. You can't see the stony parts at all.

Have anyone figured out what causes this?

Umm that is healthy PE. You are doing something right so keep it up.
