I see a new user that is only using ChatGPT to respond to posts with coral issues.

Is this allowed? Is there a rule that prohibits someone from copying and pasting AI responses to forum questions?

Here’s a more direct question: Should I report the user or do I just let it slide? What are the rules?

I don't believe so. It's advice, it's up to the op asking the question to take or reject that advice.
AI is still a newish concept so I'm sure no rules or regulations have had to be made for it yet. @revhtree @Daniel@R2R would have to make the final call.

If people needed blanket-statement advice, they could just ask ChatGPT themselves. Isn’t the whole point of a forum to get personal experiences or advice from evidence-based research?

AI responses just make the forum look cheap, in my opinion.

If a user strictly only uses ChatGPT results, and shows zero effort for personal experiences or just normal dialog. I find it very strange...

I imagine reef2reef can deploy tools to detect AI generative comments to combat this, if it did become an issue.

I do see @Miami Reef perspective on this. People come here for real dialog. Not half baked cookie cut/paste answers.

I agree completely. But as to whether it's against the TOS, as I said AI is still a new concept and I'm sure this hasn't been ran into before, so a need to add it to the TOS hasn't yet happened. This may be it. It'll ultimately be rev and Daniel's call on how to tackle it :)

According to ChatGPT based on your question:

"There isn't a universal rule that explicitly prohibits someone from copying and pasting AI-generated responses to forum questions, but the acceptability of doing so depends on several factors:

  1. Forum Guidelines: Many forums have specific rules about content originality, where members are encouraged to contribute personal insights and avoid plagiarizing or reposting content from other sources. Some forums may have rules against "spamming" or posting duplicate content that could harm the quality of the community, and copying AI-generated responses could be seen as a form of this.
  2. Transparency: Some communities may expect users to disclose when their response is generated by AI. Being transparent about using AI can help avoid misleading other forum members into thinking the response is purely human-generated. Ethical considerations, like acknowledging the source (i.e., stating that the answer is AI-generated), might be encouraged.
  3. Copyright and Ownership: While AI-generated content itself isn't directly copyrighted (in most jurisdictions, the AI tool isn't considered a legal author), it's important to check whether the specific platform you're using has any rules about copying and pasting content. Some forums might have terms of service that prohibit using content in ways not aligned with their guidelines.
  4. Purpose and Context: If you're using AI responses for informative purposes (like answering a factual question) and they add value, it might be acceptable in some forums. However, using AI-generated responses for self-promotion, spam, or to inflate post counts could violate some forums' policies.
In general, it's always a good idea to review the specific forum’s rules or terms of service before sharing AI-generated content, as policies vary by platform."

I posted this as a joke response, but the response from ChatGPT actually sounds logical.

This particular user admittedly does not have or has ever had a marine aquarium.
It does appear that moderation is aware.

I agree that allowing ChatGPT appears counter intuitive.
Why is it counter-intuitive? As with any responses in here, which are generally opinions based on personal experiences, successes, and failures, an AI response should also be taken with a grain or two of salt.

Is ownership of a SW aquarium a prerequisite to membership and commenting? If so, should commenters like Oreo be banned?

Some experts on here don’t own an aquarium. Naming folks may be against TOS.

Calm down buckaroo. Your brush is too broad.
Personally I am just going to block the user. But when I am looking for feed back, or guidance I would hope that the individual has creditable experience with regard to the topic matter, hmmm that's just me.

Please report who this is and I’m not aware and I don’t think it’s good practice at all

In the recent past I had noticed quite a few obviously AI generated responses to questions that I had made comment on. One in particular was about flushing in an overflow. The posted response was about flushing a toilet and general home plumbing.....
These new ones at least seem like good (if standard) advice if its the ones I am thinking about. I just dont see the angle here in doing this. What is the person (if it is even a real person) hoping to achieve? Just bored?

edit You know mine are not AI generated I can not spell lol

Calm down. The point I'm making is that there are a ton of people in this forum with no aquarium experience who make VALID CONTRIBUTIONS. I'm not suggesting that any of those people be somehow banned or punished. I'm saying that whether it's from an AI source or someone with little to no experience, let the mods decide the policy.
