TOS Question: ChatGPT

There's someone else who reads a few words of every fish medic post and then copy and pastes their irrelevant stock answers, terrible grammar and all.

I think if you're participating in good faith you've met the standard to not be banned. What we really need... is a downvote button.

Articles don’t have all the answers, as an expert contributor you should know that.
You sound ridiculous right now. He’s more than just an expert contributor. Don’t be snarky.

I respect Randy a lot, he’s knowledgeable on many aspects of the hobby but as most of us he’s only human.

How ironic since this thread was made in the premise of bots and AI disguised as humans. lol

I highly believe the messages I reported were using ChatGPT. You can obviously tell by the bolded, bullet points and grammar.

End it with a nice, “if you need anymore advice about ____ please feel free to ask.” And you’ve got yourself a perfectly curated AI post.

It’s almost certainly ChatGPT. Teachers and professors can spot AI without needing the person to confess. It’s just common sense at this point.

This forum isn’t a formal writing event, so when a young beginner starts speaking that way, it raises red flags.

You aren’t going to tell me a beginner that knows absolutely nothing about fish keeping will start giving knowledge about torch issues and silica test interference??

You know what’s ironic? AI chatbots use info gathered from the web. This forum has web bot visitors that index info for search engines. So in essence, this thread could become an AI response. :)

As I said before Ai don’t use slang or abbreviations on its statements. Maybe you should slowdown on the use of Ai as you may be seeing it in places were it just a normal person trying to honestly help someone.
And as a effect create real damage to members that are just trying to help another aquarists

You aren’t going to tell me a beginner that just joined a forum and admits to knowing absolutely nothing about fish keeping will start giving knowledge about torch issues and silica test interferences??

Respectfully, touch some grass.

Lets all take a second to slow down lol

You are assuming this, do you know he’s background?
Many folks as they start this hobby all they do is research, can you tell me for sure he or she didn’t to any research on the hobby?

Not sure what that truism has to do with anything I said.

My 2c:

The only responsible use of these LLMs is if you know the answer but are struggling to formulate an organized reply, so have the knowledge base to read, verify, and correct the LLM.

The danger with trusting these as sources of information is that the LLM doesn’t know fact from fiction, and has a tendency to produce very confident sounding statements of fact regardless of how factual the statements actually are.

These “AI” platforms have been known to churn out authoritative sounding fiction, including providing faked sources and citations that don’t exist, but are produced in the same pattern and “look” as someone might use to provide real citations.

I have a good amount of subject matter expertise in a non-reefing field, and based on what I’ve seen ChatGPT and similar produce in this field I would be extremely concerned if I found someone in my field was relying on it as anything more than an organization tool. If someone on one of my project teams turned out to be using it as a source of problem solving I’d have a very long sit down with them to work out exactly which aspects of the project were “solved” by the LLM and have every one of them reviewed, followed by some serious cautions to that individual about future use of LLMs.

TL;DR:

These tools are a curiosity and a very long way from being something that should be relied upon for real information.

Yes, I’m sure. Because I actually came prepared when I made this thread.

Hello all,

First timer here, I been in the fresh water tank world for about 15 years growing up. I recently have been fascinated with the salt water world and ready to get into the hobby. Any tips or recommendations is greatly appreciated!

He/she wrote that yesterday.

@sixty_reefer Being a contrarian is not cute.

@Reefering1 I didn’t say anything funny, did you know that using the laughing emoji wrong it’s actually a TOS violation on this forum?
Funny, I read your messages and think- "this guy has to be joking".
Are your feelings hurt or are you just looking for a argument?
