I recently purchased a Tropic Marin floating hydrometer for checking my salinity and calibrating my refractometer. I want to use a graduated cylinder for a testing a water sample and place the hydrometer in the graduated cylinder. My question is what would be a good size graduated cylinder to use in conjunction with the hydrometer? Does it matter if its glass or plastic?

Only thing that matters is the depth is sufficient to keep it off the bottom.

I just wanted to share a quick anecdote about Tropic Marin hydrometer. I took a water sample into my LFS for testing. They claimed my water was reading 1.028, considerably higher than I expected. I get home, pull a sample and read my hydrometer at 1.0254, about what I expected. But concerned by the discrepancy, mixed up one gallon of Randy’s DIY hydrometer calibration solution at 1.0266. Brought it up to 77C, checked with hydrometer, measured 1.0265 (bananas in background for scale lol). I can’t ask for any better accuracy than that. That’s why I love this thing. It’s just dependable and accurate without any fuss.

I'm confused about how to get the accurate reading. I have the same hydrometer but i cant seem to figure out how to get the reading Is there an indication in the hydrometer that gives the indication of salinity level?

It floats and you read the scale or am I missing what you're asking ?
