Howdy folk,

Picked up a Tunze and wow, this thing is super quiet. It’s breaking in currently and seems to be producing some white colored and rather wet skim. Assuming it needs to break in before it really gets the gunk out of the water.

It’s not the DC version so any tips/tricks would be appreciated! I stuck some fine filter floss at the bottom of the unit to help with micro bubbles and that did the trick, none or very very little are present.

I find if you just have intake just above the waterline so the skimmer is as high as you can get it, it will skim dry. Also, do you have the plastic plate installed on the pump itself as that forces the pump to skim from the top of the skimmer.
Interesting you say you find them quiet as I think they are on the noisy side although I think they are perfect for nano/small aquariums.

Perfectly quiet. I hear a light fizzing noise like a can of soda but the hum of my return pump and sound of water going into the overflow is louder than the skimmer.

Yeah, I have the plastic plate installed but I’m fine with a wet skim. Water in the collection cup is a wonderful shade of green-brown. It’s still in the break in phase so I’m just happy it works.

I think this is where DC version comes into its own, you can adjust the water level just by turning a dial.
I love these these skimmers but I would like them to be a little more quiet. I had a Nyos and that was almost silent.

I changed my 9004 to a 9004 DC pretty quickly, the magnets are pretty weak imo & i hated the fact that it kept shifting up or down whenever i cleaned the cup, wich resulted in different skimmage.
Now i have the DC version i can just adjust it with a turn on the knob, way better.
